Since Trump’s election, more Americans are choosing a life in Spain. But where?

    After Trump’s controversial election win, many more Americans are seeking a new life overseas and Spain is coming up trumps as a top destination.

    From Americans who make the move to a surge of interest online, everything is pointing to the possibility of Americans becoming the next big expat group in Spain. Spain has always been alluring for many from the US – between mid 2022 and mid 2023 for example, 2,600 homes were bought by Americans in Spain.  However, during a time of political division in the United States, Spain, with its favourable cost of living, vibrant culture and temperate climate, it’s not difficult to understand why it would certainly as an ideal destination and place to call home.

    Yet where exactly are Americans heading to?

    Americans moving to Spain: Madrid or Barcelona as top destinations

    Barcelona is a pretty obvious choice given its cosmopolitan feel. It attracts international buyers, as well as tourists for its fusion between historic city life and glamorous beach culture. Barcelona oozes creative energy, the alternative and eye-popping eclecticism. It has a strong expat community, many English-speaking services and hosts direct flights to the US. Barcelona boasts a favourable climate, in-line with Mediterranean living, and life tends to be outdoors.  Many Americans head to Sant Cugat del Vallès on the outskirts for spacious villas.

    Valencia and the Costa del Sol: a more relaxed pace of life for US moves

    For relaxation, Americans also look to Valencia or the Costa del Sol. Valencia is known for its historical archicture, excellent gastronomy and tends to offer lower property prices then Madrid, Barcelona or Málaga. Here, there is a relaxed pace of life, famous for being the best place to retire, where beautiful architecture and history meet golden coastlines. Americans are attracted to areas like Ruzafa and El Carmen.

    Similarly, down the coast to Málaga, the Costa del Sol offers the ultimate Mediterranean experience yet perhaps with a more luxurious edge and higher price tag. Expect to see our US neighbours settling in towns like Marbella, Estepona, and Fuengirola, where beachfront villas,  modern apartments or rustic fincas are among the many property options.

    Spain offers a wealth of benefits for Americans seeking a new chapter abroad. From world-class, often free healthcare to a more relaxed pace of life and regions boasting year-round pleasant weather, Spain truly has it all. While upcoming changes to the Golden Visa program may alter some pathways to residency, U.S. citizens still have viable options through various visas or investment opportunities. Best of all, Spain greets newcomers with its trademark warmth and hospitality, ensuring a welcoming start to this exciting new adventure!
