It’s so funny to me that the government is so paranoid about China when China gets our personal data just by hacking American companies anyway. Banning TikTok won’t stop them from getting that data.

A recent court ruling could lead to a TikTok ban in the US unless its parent company, ByteDance, sells the app by January 19, 2025. The DC Circuit Court of Appeals upheld a law requiring the sale, citing national security concerns over Chinese influence. While TikTok plans to appeal, the ruling supports a law backed by bipartisan Congress and signed by President Biden. Although former President Trump opposed banning TikTok, his position has shifted. The law faces further challenges, with TikTok arguing it violates free speech rights.
The decision could ultimately reach the Supreme Court.

Good luck banning it. The public sentiment and money pouring in from it will prevent this from ever being an actuality. Unfortunately.

Free enterprise scam unless it comports with American double standards. Tik tok must close shop in America, the global market is awaiting it. Ij the meantime, VPN companies will have a swell time and profits.

TikTok has made every adult friend I have that uses it insufferable to be around. No attention span, constantly cite misinformation, and actually seem lower in IQ than when we were in high school or college. I can’t even have a proper conversation with these people anymore since they’ll inevitably start doom scrolling while I’m talking. Kids should never have access to anything like this, and I’m starting to think adults shouldn’t either. They’re all addicts.

Had the US ever banned an app before? How would that work?

Not that I’m trying to defend TikTok in any way or care. I just absolutely despise government intrusion into private affairs and political bullshit to enforce authoritarian overreach. Basically. Don’t fucking tell me what I am allowed to use on the internet. If you ban it, we’ll ignore you and use it anyway.

So people know, what makes TikTok dangerous is less about the data and most about it being used for propaganda. Romania is redoing their entire election right now because of the investigation that revealed how much TikTok was used to spread false propaganda and prop up a far right pro-Russia politician that the majority of the country had never even heard of. It was also used by Russia and bots to get the youth using the entire platform to either sit out this last US election or vote Trump as a means of protesting the US policies involving Israel.
It is also THE MOST addicting social media app today, with many users scrolling for 9 hours straight without breaks. It’s designed for regular dopamine dosing, and it is mostly used by young people.
Other social media should certainly be regulated and shaped in ways that don’t harm people psychologically, etc. But TikTok is being weaponized by foreign adversaries without any form of US oversight or investigative control.

I’m sure they want them to sell it to a US company as there are bunch of American billionaires are lining up to buy it. This is one of the rare instances where a company outside of the US has this much global power and influence and won’t just be easily gobbled up by an American company. I’m not on Tik Tok’s side here or China, it’s just hypocrisy and we have the illusion of a free market.

TikTok yuck… But, banning something like this in the US is going to set a precedent, and soon after we will see all sorts of things being banned.

All the people in this thread showing how mad they are about tiktok potentially being banned and at the same time showing what side of the political spectrum they’re on.
It’s hilarious and scary.

A stupid amount of people downplay just how dangerous it is for us to have our dopamine constantly overloaded. I try explaining this to people and it’s like talking to a brick wall every time.

I love when people blame the app for a problem. The problem isnt the app. There will be new app that takes it place almost over night and there already are many more apps that are the same as tiktok.
The problem, and no one talks about it is the millions spent in research to exploit humans and deliver content that exposes weakness. Do you think Tiktok has a monopoly on this? It doesn’t.

Last thing we need is a company that doesn’t kowtow to the powers that be.
Imagine a social media site that people could use to foment revolution against the status quo. That sounds dangerous, better make the parent company sell it off to a company fully controlled by the American oligarchs, who would then be better equipped to control the narrative. /s
