Brits looking to relocate abroad have chosen their top 10 wish list of countries to head for, and Spain is not one of them.

    Contrary to assumptions, those societies that have more of a yearning to relocate abroad are all in Europe, with Asia second and African nations back in forth place, according to the UN’s 2020 migration report. Where they decide to head for varies greatly from country to country though.

    According to a 2024 survey by 1st Move International relocation services, Spain is no longer on the list of most desired places for the British to escape to. The online survey revealed that the USA was number one on the list of Brits’ dream destinations, for ease of language use, choice of climates and economic opportunities, and suitabity at any stage in life.

    What countries to Brits prefer to move to from the UK?

    Australia came in second place, again for study-reluctant Brits, combined with a perception of better weather.

    Number 3 was Dubai, especially now that The UAE country is offering financial incentives to relocate to the middle of the desert. The once oil-rich nation is only too aware that crude oil won’t last forever and offsetting their business interests will need bringing in professionals from elsewhere. 

    The list is followed by New Zealand, Cyprus and South Africa, but nowhere to be seen is the traditional favourite, Spain.

    Why are Brits no longer wishing to come to Spain to live?

    Inflation, a housing crisis, and a lack of work opportunities for non-Spanish speaking residents have put the dampers on the Mediterranean paradise dream, along with Brexit rules.

    But who does want to come to Spain to live? For the best part in Malaga, Granada, Bilbao, Madrid and Barcelona, one of the fastest growing foreign nationalities moving to Spain is North Americans. But, do they come for the sun, sea, sand and sangria? Not really. Most seek a favourable exchange rate with the dollar, culture and history, and personal safety.
