LAS VEGAS (KSNV) — NV Energy has issued a Public Safety Outage Management (PSOM) watch for Friday, January 3, in the Angel Peak and Kyle Canyon zones, as weather conditions may necessitate a proactive power shutdown to prevent wildfires.
A potential outage could begin at approximately 4 p.m. on Friday and last until mid-morning on Saturday, January 4.
This period includes the time needed for NV Energy crews to inspect lines and equipment for damage, vegetation, or debris before safely restoring power.
NV Energy plans to use a microgrid to maintain power for as many customers as possible.
Crews were on Mt. Charleston on Thursday morning to set up the microgrid and generators in anticipation of high winds.
Customers should expect a brief outage between noon and 3 p.m. on Friday while the microgrid is staged and energized. If conditions remain stable, those served by the microgrid will not experience another outage until the event concludes and the microgrid is disconnected.
NV Energy emphasized that safety is its highest priority, and proactive outages are a key measure to protect the community and environment from wildfires.
The company will monitor forecasts and actual conditions throughout the event. If conditions worsen, the microgrid may need to be disconnected, resulting in an outage.
Customers are encouraged to prepare a safety plan, with tips available at nvenergy.com/psom.
NV Energy has notified all impacted customers via phone, text, and email and will provide regular updates on the status of the outage event.
The company is also working to notify its Green Cross customers in the area and has offered them hotel accommodations if a PSOM event is initiated.
