Good people, my name is Jorge, I’m from León and I wanted to tell you something. I’m blind… well, I still see something, but it’s just enough to alleviate it well. The truth is that I take life with humor, because if not, what a mess. I have a small project called El Bastón Brillante, where I tell my day to day life without filters or embellishments. Everything as it happens, the good, the bad and the funny. I upload it to Instagram and X, in case you want to take a look.
I’ll tell you one: one Sunday morning I went to buy a loaf of bread and the newspaper, like I always did. The shopkeeper looks at me and says: “And why do you buy the newspaper if you are blind?” And I, without shying away, blurt out: “Because I am a modern blind man.” And I showed him how my cell phone reads the newspaper out loud. The man was so amazed that he told me: “Hey, I’m going to look at this smartphone thing, it interests me.” In the end I ended up recommending technology to him!
And of the challenges… I’ll leave this one for you to try: muscle memory with a landline. Surely you remember the typical number that you always dial, right? Well, cover your eyes and try to dial it on one of those old telephones, with old-fashioned buttons. Let’s see if you can get it. I did it the other day and ended up calling a bar I didn’t even know. When they answered, I had to say out loud: “Sorry, it’s the blind man’s challenge!” We laughed for a while, but I don’t know if they forgave me…
And well, I leave you with a reflection: many people ask me if it is not hard to be blind. And yes, of course there are difficult moments, but I think the key is learning to laugh at yourself and finding a way around things. You don’t have to see everything to enjoy what matters: the laughter, the people, and well, even the confusion has its charm.
If anyone has doubts or curiosity about what the life of a blind person is like or about my project, feel free to ask. I love sharing these things, and if I make you smile, all the better. 🙂
