I’ve been thinking about humanity’s trajectory and the possibility that our progress is being artificially limited. What if an advanced, external force is preventing civilizations—including ours—from evolving beyond a certain point to maintain order in the galaxy?

Imagine Earth as part of a massive, controlled system—a "galactic zoo"—designed by superior beings to freeze civilizations in time, stopping technological and social advancement to avoid chaos. But what if someone discovered the truth? Should they risk dismantling the system for freedom, potentially triggering conflict across species, or let it continue to preserve peace?

It raises some deep questions about the ethics of control and whether unchecked evolution could lead to destruction. Could this explain why technological and societal progress sometimes feels like it’s being throttled?

Would love to hear thoughts on how this idea could fit into future studies and our understanding of civilization's development.

Cultural evolution is accelerating, and many think it’s going parabolic wrt technology, heralding the advent of AGI.

What’s the argument for progress being limited in some way?

  2. Of course it’s being artificially limited. The contemporary capitalist-culture and the system that pretends nationalist countries are capable of global cooperation are absolutely incompatible with any genuine societo-techno-politik processes and future-forward thinking (ie, can’t have planetary nation-states when we’re still arguing over the concept of country borders). Of course, we also know that the changes needed to break out of this self-perpetuating cycle are apocalyptic, to say the least.

  3. If human progress is being limited, they’re doing a terrible job of it, IMO.

I tend to prefer Banks’ idea that we are have been flagged as a non-interference control group by the civilization with the most influence in our volume of space.

Or alternatively that we are in a historical simulation of some period, focused on some up coming events, eg the emergence of AI, climate change, etc

We were using horses 150 years ago, now we have people living in space and have seemingly figured out a great deal about the nature of reality. How is progress being throttled?

I’d argue if we’re not advancing fast enough (like not reacting to climate change or inequality), if squarely due to our own foibles, not a malevolent zoo keeper.
