UK prisons recruit officers from Nigeria in move which sees some sleeping rough

We have 9 million economically inactive adults and 1.5 million unemployed, do we really need to bring in migrants for these jobs?

Additionally is it a sensible idea to import migrant prison officers from what is widely regarded as the most corrupt country in Africa, when we already have a major problem with corrupted prison guards?

From someone who’s been in the service, I’ve said for years that in 20/30 years, the majority of prison officers will be foreign. It’s an awful, thankless job. No UK citizen in their sane mind would do it. Go work in Tesco so you don’t have to deal with all the blood, shit, piss, constant abuse and violence.

This will be in part due to our obsession with crimnal records. In most countries, only really serious offences are permanently centrally recorded. In this country, it’s everything – convictions, cautions, even intelligence.

When I first left school, 1/3rd of young men had a criminal record. I have teenage cautions for scratching a car and playing with a BB gun in the park. It’s made applying for visas over the years an absolute delight. I’d be surprised if it wouldn’t be a barrier to this job.

I’m sure it’s the same in Nigeria.

My brother works in a facility that houses young people who have committed serious crimes (I didn’t want to say a prison but that is essentially what it is) and he is always saying about how high the staff turnover is.

Given the horror stories he’s told me I can only imagine a tiny percentage of people would have the stomach for such a job.
