Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said his country would respond if President Donald Trump pressed ahead with his threat to impose tariffs on the US’s northern neighbour.
“Canada provides many of the necessary inputs that the American economy is going to need,” he told reporters on Tuesday morning.
Trudeau, flanked by senior ministers at Montebello outside Ottawa, said their focus was upholding the friendship with the US and protecting Canada from tariffs.
Trudeau cited energy, critical minerals, fertiliser and uranium as vital commodities Canada sends to underpin the US economy.
“We are confident that the facts bear out this is a win-win relationship,” he said.
Canada is taking Trump’s proposals “seriously” but “we will also remain steady and strong in advocating for this incredibly successful trading relationship,” Trudeau said.
