Well, who would have thought that a characteristic that’s present in 10% of all mammals is also reflected in a large population of… mammals? 😌

So still 10%, just that young people are coming out earlier.
The actual news is a call to government to support them more.

I thought 1/10 was the usually understood figure anyway? I’m not especially surprised by this.

Hasn’t this been the case and common knowledge for decades? I heard this 30 years ago.

Is this news? Wasnt it 1 in ten like, twenty years ago? I’m honestly surprised it’s not higher.

I suspect it’s higher. I’m bi but have never felt comfortable talking about it.
When I was younger I was afraid of messing around the gay guys because I was clearly only into them sexually and not romantically (no idea why).
Personally I found labels really challenging when I was younger. I let some people make assumptions but it just meant I wasn’t getting what I needed.
I spent most of my twenties wondering if I was actually gay or bi or straight and generally frozen by indecision. Didn’t date at much at all.
Had a good couple of years in my late twenties not caring and really exploring. That was good, wish it had been sooner! Decent self discovery.
Now I’m married in a hetero relationship and monogamous. So should I count towards the statistics or not?

I always found the pantomime of getting on like there’s only one correct way to be a man or woman and any deviation from it to be punished really crazy.

Given the climate we are seeing emerge currently, and based on some of the responses in this thread from people quick to point to disability as causative, I doubt this figure will hold up for much longer.

I’m not versed in all the terminology. I thought sexuality was something we’re born with, not choose. If so,why is it ‘identifying’ and not just ‘are’?

I don’t know why they are using a photo of kids in school uniforms for this article

1 in 10 was the figure often quoted back in the 1980s … I am surprised it is that low now actually

I bet it’s more but they’re just scared of coming out either due to societal or familial issues that would be caused.

To all the people saying “it was always 1 in 10”
Was it? For both genders? For me that stat only applied to men

It’s so different compared to when I was young. Now, in the arse end of nowhere England, I walked into a cafe and there were two gay couples clearly out on dates. They looked like normal guys as well which wouldn’t have been the case when I was 19. As I left one of the couples were playing footsie with their hands across the table. So cute.

Not a good survey really, many people hide their sexuality , so the numbers can’t be accurate

Pretty sure they said 1 in 10 were gay like 20 years ago so this suggests the proportion of the population identifying as not hetero has decreased

When I was a teenager, it was 1 in 10 so why the headline

Wasn’t this what it’s always been? I recall same numbers back in the 1970s.

Good job they don’t live in the US, then. He’ll come for them soon.
