TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) – ProMedica and Nationwide Children’s Hospital are terminating the entities’ ‘Toledo for Kids’ affiliation following a recent legal battle.

A joint statement from ProMedica and Nationwide Thursday said the affiliation agreement that aimed to bolster care for pediatric patients will not move forward.

Mercy Health recently filed a lawsuit over that partnership, citing a breach of contract by Nationwide Children’s Hospital in an agreement it has with Mercy. Mercy sold off its pediatric assets to Nationwide a few years ago. Then Nationwide struck a working agreement with ProMedica for pediatric care and partnerships according to court filings.

Mercy Health said in court filings it was left out of negotiations. Nationwide said it tried to involve Mercy on several occasions, maintaining that position in the Thursday statement.

“Unfortunately, this has become a business conflict over contractual language and not what’s in the best interest of the community’s children,” the joint statement from ProMedica and Nationwide read. “Neither Nationwide Children’s nor ProMedica will place their business conflicts over the best interests of those we serve.”

Mercy Health provided the following statement on the matter:

“For more than 170 years, Mercy Health has proudly been the region’s trusted and stable healthcare provider, dedicated to serving all members of our community.

It is deeply disappointing that Nationwide and ProMedica have made the decision to immediately dissolve the Toledo for Kids initiative, instead of fulfilling the agreement made years ago that allows Mercy Health to meaningfully participate in the future of our community’s pediatric care.

Mercy Health remains committed to ensuring that Toledo’s children and families have full access and meaningful choice to the best and most comprehensive care possible. We will continue to advocate for the health and well-being of our community, and work toward a future where every child receives the care they deserve.”
