KALAMAZOO, Mich. — Some Kalamazoo neighbors are getting energy efficient upgrades.
The Kalamazoo Climate Crisis Coalition (KCCC) was recently awarded a $18.9 million three-year Community Change grant from the Environmental Protection Agency, according to KCCC officials.
About $16 million will go the repairs and increasing energy efficiency for 300 single-family homes in the Northside, Eastside, West Douglas and Edison neighborhoods as part of the Holistic Healthy Homes project.
Four local neighborhood emergency shelters will also be remolded to serve as emergency shelters during periods of extreme heat, extreme cold and flooding, officials said.
The project is projected to reduce CO2 production by 648 metric tons.
In addition, KCCC operations are set to expand to support the project under the recent appointment of Executive Director Jenny Doezema, according to KCCC officials.
Community information sessions will begin early spring and will include details on how to enroll in the process.
