NORMAL (25News Now) – Only about 35% of workers in science fields are women. To inspire more girls to work in science one day, the Children’s Discovery Museum in Normal celebrated International Day of Women and Girls in Science.

Local organizations and women working in science set up tables throughout the museum. They talked to kids about their careers and helped them with hands-on activities. Fields represented included energy, nursing, agriculture, and computer science.

“When we show young people that women are in these fields, and they’re doing this work, then more of them will go into those fields. These are jobs that need to be filled. We need the workforce to be looking at these jobs. Specifically in Central Illinois, there’s a lot of STEM in agriculture,” said Beth Whisman, executive director of the Discovery Museum.

This is the Children’s Discovery Museum’s second time celebrating International Women and Girls in Science Day. The United Nations has recognized the day for 10 years.
