Good and should also be designing for them above this value

May i remind people this figure includes the value of military training , intelligence support , manufacturing and cost of older disused or due replacement kit , not a flat monetary sum of cash .
You cant just divert this to the NHS as they have no use for advanced medium range air to air missiles .
Ukraine gives back to us unparalleled cooperation and information on our long standing enemy who has proven itself to medal in our politics and try to undermine our undersea cables .
What we are getting is a very good deal for a nation that almost certainly will join nato over the next decade .
Their foothold protects Europe even if your not swayed by the morality of helping the innocent people of Ukraine what they give to us ( as a member of the armed forces ) is well worth the investment .

I’d like to hope that when this is all over Britain and the Ukraine has a prosperous trading agreement

Before people inevitably start to whinge, remember the Russians are now locked into a War Economy they have to keep fighting to keep the economy going.
At the same time the US is completely unreliable.
If we don’t support Ukraine now, it will mean having to support the Germans, and the Poles, and it will cost far more than just treasure.

If we spent that money on the NHS instead…!
…then we’d have 10m Ukrainian refugees.

We’re buying time with this aid. Every day Ukraine holds out is another day we have to prepare. Every piece of Russian equipment Ukraine destroys is one less we might have to destroy.
Supporting Ukraine could end up being one of the best investments we’ve ever made as a nation.

Well since the nazis in America will do a deal with the dictator in Russia it’s kinda irrelevant. What do you think trump has asked for in return for Ukraine from putin?

There needs to be a long-term plan for Ukraine besides funding an endless proxy war at the expense of Ukrainian blood.

Given the trump narrative today I think we will either have to put British boots on the ground or concede

The amount of dumbasses on this sub that thinks we’re sending cash to Ukraine is insane. I swear people are becoming dumber by the day

On that note, they should also give some to the Palestinians to fight their illegal occupier seeing as the UK created this entire fiasco in the Middle East to begin with

Meanwhile the UK is falling apart while we pretend were still super rich and can afford to be the worlds charity. I guess from central London vantage point we still seem very wealthy. Whatever old people can live without heating in the winter I suppose, its no biggie.

Some of the military hardware previously donated was near its “use before” date requiring costly disposal or upgrade maintenance. True for the earlier storm shadow transfers.
So gifting aged weapons to Ukraine could be a low cost “use or lose” transfer, not diverting cash from the ever needy NHS.
The value to Ukraine is either the full market price or the value of the damage caused when they unleash it. 😂

Maybe a silly question, but is this money that would’ve been spent on the military anyway?
The military budget is around £50bn per year, are they just saying of that budget £4.5bn is going towards Ukraine? Or is it a seperate £4.5bn that was just floating around?

I’m fairly certain a large chunk of this is actual cash they could use on home soil. I get that it’s inclusive of “stuff” and it’s illogical to argue against my point by saying “oh you’re doctors not going to use a SAM site etc”. There will be an amount that could for certain be diverted to our public services.

5.5b divided by 37.4 million tax payers, costs each tax payer roughly 147 dollars?
I’m happy to pay that to ruin Putin’s day!

People fail to realise Russia hasn’t modernised like most nations (including the UK) and believes outright imperialism is fine. Whereas the rest of us try and be more tolerant or atleast don’t resort to full scale war to get our way.
And no the Russian invasion of Ukraine is nothing like Iraq, Afghanistan or even Northern Ireland. If you placed Russia in any of those conflicts they’d be orders of magnitude more brutal and would not have the same attempt to preserve non combatant life even if you could argue the reasons for the conflicts could be somewhat immoral.
