My e-bike is limited to 15.5 mph from the factory, by law. Maybe we should consider something like that for cars?
edit: it’s always so interesting to me how this triggers drivers so badly. Clear link between speeding and increased accidents and mortality, clear evidence that the majority of drivers don’t adhere to speed limits, clear evidence that many drivers GREATLY exceed speed limits. Do we do something about it? Absolutely not! Muh freedoms!

Now do an article about all the fucking idiots joining and leaving motorways at 40mph.

This might seem hyperbolic, but I honestly believe if you’re doing that speed on a 30 road then you should receive a lifetime ban from driving.
I think you could argue that is as, or more dangerous than driving under the influence.
Billoo77 on
They use instances like this to justify hitting us normal drivers with new restrictions and lower limits.
Obviously not realising the type of person to drive 120 in a 30 is unlikely to give a shit about the law.

I find it astonishing that someone would do 88-120mph on a 20mph road

I have a friend who had a young boy do 130mph into the side of his house. This morphed the structure of his house and did an estimated 200k damage to put right.
The boy was a traveler with no insurance.
Police came and couldn’t do much and also said it’s not uncommon.

The issue is the lack of enforcement, you can have the most strict rules in the world when it comes to traffic safety and speeding, but if there’s no way to enforce it, this is what happens, people stop caring and do what they want because it doesn’t come back to them.

As a woman who has been in many cars with many boys trying to show off by speeding down country lane, I really really hate it. Not only are you putting me in danger, but yourself n everyone else on the road. To me it’s the same mindset as drunk driving. It’s stupid, unnecessary and absolutely not cool whatsoever. Why do people speed like this?

I’m surprised someone could get a car up to 122 on a 30 road. I suspect it’s one of those cases where there was a perfectly good national speed limit road that the council turned into a 30 road. That obviously doesn’t make it right though to speed though.

My biggest, personal problem with British roads is that it now seems that the majority of motorways are now a default speed 50 mph which is insane. Supposedly for “roadworks” yet these roadworks have been in place since at least 2017 and just keep getting pushed back by a year, every year. Never anyone working, just traffic cones and average speed cameras so I doubt they will go back to being 70 mph

doing 122 on 30 mph is daft. but road design and council decisions about speed limits can be even dafter. My local council decided to make a blanket 20mph for the whole town. “To make it so uncomfortable to drive so people will walk more” – that’s a quote. It takes 90 minutes to walk from one end of the town to another. and 20mph covers 1 mile stretch of an empty 4-lane road as well.
I guess what I’m trying to say is that it should be more about road designs and less about arbitrary limitations. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Life time ban.
Get caught behind the wheel of a car again?…..whole life sentence of prison.

The idea that someone prepared to do 122mph in a 30 zone gives a flying fig about speed limits is ridiculous. Near me a lady was run over and killed by a car. The speed limit was subsequently lowered from 40 to 30. The car that killed her was stolen, being driven by a 16 year old and was travelling at over 80mph.
Striking-Giraffe5922 on
Certainly going to jail for that speed along a residential road…..fucking lunatic!
The driver will be charged with dangerous driving as well as speeding.
A DD conviction is a ban and a compulsory test resit.

I’d like to see fines (for parking, as well as speeding), be linked to your income and be on an escalating scale. First fine = 5% of your monthly take home (say – but linked to the absolute speed you were doing), then double it for every subsequent offence. At some point, no matter how wealthy you are, the pain of that penalty will be too much to risk.
Also if you are serious about speeding being dangerous and illegal, then make it illegal to sell vehicles that can drive at 80mph+. It’s not rocket science.

Imagine if there were no rules. No speed limits. No cameras. No traffic calming measures? No restrictions.
There are motorists that piss and moan every chance they get over any of the things above.
We need to start ignoring motorists.

I vote anyone who gets caught doing this gets tied to a chair on the side of the race track and people drive right past them at 120mph

Instant lifetime ban is in order.
And make him watch the car get crushed.
