It is amazing that people this stupid can make it to positions of authority over other people.

This is very much a sign of decline in general knowledge of workplace rights in the workplace. That the manager went through his entire career without ever having registered that you cannot fire people for getting pregnant is astonishing.

While legal protections have increased, knowledge of legal protections has dramatically declined (probably due to attacks in trade unions). Normally that manifests as companies being able to get away with a lot more, but thankfully in this case the employee knew well enough that it was wrong.

How can be be so fucking stupid? Workplace protections for pregnant women need to be seriously strengthened.

    4. The ignorance of managers knows no bounds.

I used to work in local government and they were going through a period known as “rightsizing”, basically posts were cut and everyone had to re-apply for their own jobs. A lady colleague was called in for interview by management, also incidentally a woman, and told that due to her taking excessive time off (maternity leave) she would not be offered a post. Manager had obviously not discussed this approach with the HR lady sitting next to her who raised her eyebrows at this.

My colleague’s reply was along the lines of “OK, so you are making me redundant because I took time off work to have a baby?”

“Yes,” says manager. HR lady is now visibly apoplectic. Needless to say my colleague’s reply was found a position very quickly.

    5. I’m worried there’s an epidemic of Eastern European women gaming the tribunal system for big payoffs.

A similar thing happened at my work, where two eastern European women got pay outs for unfair dismissal and i felt they didn’t deserve the money.

This case may be valid but i can’t help but spot a pattern.

As others have said; how stupid people like this become a “boss” is incredible. Really does prove that some people are capable of failing upwards.

Unfortunately she tried to continue working.
She should have just presented a sick note.

When sick from pregnancy it’s truly horrible and exhausting
