The European aviation market is somewhat notable for being one of the largest in the world.
Europe’s domestic aviation market also competes with a well-developed train network
. But where trains can’t compete is to European offshore islands – and Spain
has two major groups of islands, the Canaries and the Balearic Islands.
While the United Kingdom
has the most airline seating capacity of any European country, most of it is international, with only a comparatively small proportion being domestic flights. According to data provided by OAG, the country with the most domestic airline capacity is Spain. OAG’s list of European countries excludes Russia but includes Turkey. Here is a look at Spain’s domestic aviation market, the largest in Europe.
Spain, Europe’s largest domestic airline market
Europe is made up of many geographically small or medium-sized countries and the continent generally has a well-developed rail system. This means that the bulk of the flights in most European countries are international flights, typically to other European countries. However, it should be noted that many international flights in Europe function more like domestic flights for passengers due to
most European countries participating in the Schengen Area
.

Excluding Turkey (as it is geographically 97% in Asia), Russia, and Ukraine (whose skies are closed to commercial air traffic), Spain is the second-largest country in Europe after France. Spain is a mountainous country, and it includes two notable archipelagos and two notable exclave cities (one of which has an airport). These islands play a dominant role in giving Spain the largest domestic capacity in Europe.
Scheduled airlines of Spain:
- Air Europa/ Air Europa Express
- Iberia/Iberia Express
- Air Nostrum (regional Iberia franchise)
- AlbaStar

In February 2025, the United Kingdom is scheduled to be the largest European market in terms of seat capacity. It is scheduled to have 12.2 million seats, of which 1.98 million are domestic seats and 10.2 million are international. Spain is scheduled to be the second-largest overall with 11.8 million seats. However, Spain’s domestic seat capacity is double that of the United Kingdom with 4.1 million seats (and 7.7 million international seats).

Also worthy of note is that Spain’s daily seat capacity increased by 9.5% in February 2025 relative to February 2024, adding 636,200 seats. In that month, Spain is scheduled to have 28,244 domestic flights, contributing 1.95 billion ASMs.
Spain’s Atlantic Canary and Mediterranean Balearic Islands are popular European holiday destinations. The Canaries received almost 18 million tourists in 2024 and the Balearic Islands received more than 15 million (the bulk of the tourists were international visitors). In 2023,
there were up to 117 daily flights between the Canaries and the United Kingdom
.

The Canaries have a population of 2.3 million while the Balearic Islands are home to 1.2 million residents.

Binter Canarias, the flag carrier of the Spanish autonomous community of the Canary Islands
. The airline is based at Gran Canaria Airport and Tenerife North Airport in the Canary Islands. The airline offers inter-island services within the Canaries and other Atlantic Islands in the region. It also operates some flights to the Spanish Mainland and to some other European countries.

Five or six of the busiest domestic routes are between the Canary Islands. Tied for tenth place is a Binter Canarias flight from Tenerife North to La Palma in the Canaries with 156 flights scheduled for February. Iberia’s Barcelona to Madrid flight is ranked in the table above as that flight has more seat capacity (26,040 to 11,224). Additionally, another of the top ten domestic flights connects the Canaries with the Spanish mainland.

Spain’s popular Balearic Islands
Spain’s Balearic Islands’ major islands are Ibiza, Formentera, Mallorca, and Menorca. AbcMallorca writes, “the Balearic Islands are hugely popular destinations for holidaymakers of different nationalities. Located east of the Spanish mainland, the Islas Baleares comprise four very different islands: Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza and Formentera. Their position in the Mediterranean Sea has made them vulnerable to invasion throughout history, but today’s invaders – the millions of tourists who visit every year for a holiday – are welcome.”

Two of the top ten busiest domestic flights in Spain are between the Balearic Islands. The seventh and eighth busiest flights connect Palma de Mallorca with Ibiza and Menorca. Many of the other busiest domestic Spanish flights are also to the Canary and Balearic Islands, with comparatively few flights connecting mainland Spanish destinations with other mainland Spanish destinations.
Flights to Spanish Melilla exclave
Of the eleven busiest domestic routes, all but one of them are to offshore Spanish possessions. Only one flight (tied in the 10/11th position) with 156 flights is between two mainland Spain destinations (Barcelona and Madrid). All the other flights are to the Canary Islands and the Balearic Islands with one flight to Spain’s Melilla exclave.
Melilla is a Spanish exclave autonomous city on the North African coast in the Mediterranean Sea bordering Morocco. Melilla is one of two exclave cities by Morocco and both are claimed by Morocco. The other exclave city is Ceuta, which lacks an airport. Ceuta and Melilla are also served by numerous ferries from the Spanish mainland. Melilla has a population of 86,500 and is served by the Melilla Airport.

The Melilla Airport has a capacity of up to 500,000 passengers, and it serves around 500,000 passengers in 2024. The only airline operating at the Melilla Airport is Iberia Regional/Air Nostrum, which operates flights to eleven Spanish cities. The busiest route is the short flight connecting the southern Spanish city of Malaga across the narrow Mediterranean near the Strait of Gibraltar.

Other European domestic flights
Separately, France has 1.7 million seats scheduled for February 2025. Not only do these domestic flights serve France’s large Mediterranean Island of Corsica, but they also serve its far-flung possessions around the world. France’s overseas departments of French Guiana in South America, Guadeloupe and Martinique in the Caribbean, and Reunion and Mayotte in the Indian Ocean near Madagascar are considered as France as any part of mainland France.

European countries’ February domestic seat capacity:
- Spain: 4.1 million
- Turkey: 4.0 million
- Italy: 2.9 million
- United Kingdom: 2.0 million
- France: 1.7 million
The United Kingdom has around 2 million domestic seats scheduled for February. Many of these connect Northern Ireland with the rest of the United Kingdom on the island of Great Britain. Overall, the United Kingdom is ranked fourth by domestic flight seating capacity in Europe.
Italy is ranked second in Europe by seating capacity, with 2.9 million seats scheduled for February 2025. Italy is a long and narrow country with flying the quickest way to get from one end of the country to the other. Importantly, Italy has two major Mediterranean islands – Sicily with a population of 4.8 million, and Sardinia with a population of 1.6 million.
The country with the largest share of domestic seats is Turkey. While Turkey may lack the islands that drive some of the other European domestic flights, it is much larger than the other European countries and is a very mountainous country.

In sixth domestic seat capacity place is Norway – a very long and skinny country punctuated by fjords. It takes over 30 hours of nonstop driving to travel from one end of Norway to the other, although it’s often faster to drive through Sweden. Germany is one of the largest countries in Europe with the greatest population. However, it is also well-connected by trains, and it is ranked seventh by domestic seat capacity.
