They were probably trying to create an alibi, “we were in the pub at the time”, hoping there would be enough uncertainty over time of death that it would work.
Clearly it didn’t work in this instance but I can see their thought process.
Honestly，I’d need a drink if i did that to someone.
I guess he knew he was going to get caught and decided to have a last pint before his life as he knew it, also ended.
Where else to go to have a nice cold pint, and wait for this all to blow over?
