    China and US need to cooperate on AI or risk ‘opening Pandora’s box’, ambassador warns

      “China’s ambassador to the United States [Xie Feng](https://www.scmp.com/author/xie-feng?module=inline&pgtype=article) has called for closer cooperation on artificial intelligence, warning that the technology risks “opening Pandora’s box”.

      Xie said in a video message to a forum co-hosted by Duke University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill that there was an urgent need for global cooperation in regulating the field.

      He added that the two countries should “jointly promote” AI global governance, saying: “Emerging high technology like AI could open Pandora’s box … If left unchecked it could bring ‘grey rhinos’.”

      “Grey rhinos” is management speak for obvious threats that people ignore until they become crises.”

      I doubt China has the capabilities to develop AI without industrial espionage. Nobody has created much of value so far – chatbots should not be allowed to be classed as AI

      Arms races are only ever worked on by singular nation-states, unless they’re vassals of another. The UN would be about as effective at stopping conflict as a mutual agreement to limit AGI.

      It’s not about AI, it’s about USA and China cooperating. Too politically charged.

      Maybe if either side forsook their passports and worked away in neutral soil.

      Scientists on both sides have AI concerns.

      We’ve already opened Pandora’s Box. No, I don’t mean SkyNet or some super-intelligent AI. I mean billionaires and corporations see the endgame of laying off people and just letting the social contract collapse. They are making a mad dash to develop the tools to do so even if those tools simply aren’t as good as people. They’re good enough to turn a profit and, to the billionaires and corporations, that’s all that matters, societal consequences be damned.

      Story of the end of our species.  We will become the cells of an emergent AI organism, just as cells and mitochondria were subsumed within their inventions.  No big deal, merely the universe repeating itself, with variation.  Like a symphony.  Take a deep breath.  It‘ll all be ok.

      “Cooperation” is not a word that is in fashion in with the new administration

      Which means the Trump admin will do the opposite in the worst possible way.
