Happening this weekend is a health event for the whole family at Joe Brown Park. Men, women and children can get all the critical screenings you may need, a summer camp signup and fresh foods all in one place. Organizers say they are targeting the New Orleans East community for a reason.”We call it high index areas. That’s where health disparities were on the higher spectrum in terms of residents not having a primary care,” said event organizer Tonia Moore. Moore is the director of community engagement for Ochsner Health system. The event Saturday is about meeting the challenge to address health disparities head-on. “We are addressing issues like chronic disease, women’s health, breast, colon and prostate cancer awareness. Mental health resources will also be available,” said Shaniece Bickham, President of the Pontchartrain Chapter of The Links Incorporated.When it comes to chronic conditions, early detection and education are critical. Experts say it starts with knowing your numbers from regular screenings. Baseline numbers can empower residents to make a plan and take charge of their own health. There will be screenings for vision, hearing, dental, glucose, cholesterol and blood pressure and more. Each family that completes all of the screenings will receive a box of fresh food. Ochsner Health, Pontchartrain Links and the New Orleans Recreation Department teamed up for the wellness event. There will even be summer camp registration on site.The event is Saturday March 8th, from 9 a.m.- 1 p.m. at the Joe Brown Rec Center. 5601 Read Blvd.
