The number of divorces is increasing while the number of marriages is decreasing in North Macedonia
Marriages were once seen as eternal, but today more and more couples are choosing divorce as a last resort, or perhaps the only option, in North Macedonia. According to the latest report by the State Statistical Office, in the last three months of the year, 601 couples divorced, which is a 23,9 percent increase compared to the same period a year ago. According to the same report, the number of couples choosing marriage has also decreased, with 2 marriages being concluded within three months, which is a 430 percent decrease compared to the same period a year ago.
Experts in sociological and psychological circumstances say that a hasty decision to marry is one of the main causes that lead to divorce.
“I think that the main reasons and what the latest research shows are that couples or partners who decide to share their lives together do not know each other. That is, there is a lack of recognition between them and their interests. Because before marriage there are many interesting moments, where it is normal to have emotional work, work of feelings and there the logic is not so clear, but in fact after marriage, when they start living together and start getting to know each other, I believe that then things that were not seen in time begin to surface,” said Fatime Ziberi, psychologist, reports Alsat.mk.
Ziberi says that the lack of tolerance and the sociological aspect are also some of the reasons that most influence the growth of this phenomenon.
“Let’s not forget other causes, maybe it’s the sociological aspect, it’s also the environment where they live. Because the couple as a couple had expectations that they would have their privacy, they would have the right to do whatever they want, and enjoy their happiness, while the physical and social conditions do not allow for such a thing,” said Fatime Ziberi, a psychologist, reports KosovaPress.
According to data from the State Statistical Office, in the fourth quarter of 2024, the number of births in the country also decreased. 3 children were born, and compared to the same period last year, their number decreased by 968%. In the fourth quarter of 4.2, 2024 people died, of which 5 were infants, which marks a decrease of 174% compared to the same quarter of 10. The natural increase is negative -1.0, which means that the number of births is lower than the number of deaths.
