I wonder if this will be the first time all the reform MPs will bother to turn up.

    2. Salty_Nutbag on

This is one of those silly petitions, isn’t it?

      Yes, it is.
Guess people still haven’t cottoned on…

Public petitions is not how our system works.
The damn thing was only set-up because idiots kept demanding one.

This “petition” thing needs to die.
It’s just a load of shite.

Instead, urge your MP to do something useful.
Perhaps attend some sort of fund-raising event for cancer patients, or whatever.

      Stupid fucking bollocks.

      Edit:
There is a commenter that replied with
“Time to admit Brexit was an utter failure. Grow up.”
And immediately blocked me, so I could not reply.
      How about you grow up.
This is nothing whatsoever to do with “Brexit”.
It’s all to do with the effectiveness and relevance of “petitions” (a tool of direct democracy) on the British parliamentary system (which is not a direct democracy, but a representative democracy).
Anyway, there’s a word for you. But I can’t type it, as it would have me sanctioned for “attacking” you.
And the mods have asked me kindly not to attack morons.

    3. Use the link to email your MP if you don’t want to continue this self-imposed sanctions/tariffs that was pushed by russian owned newspapers in the UK. We need to reverse this insanity and regain the ability to ship boat migrants back to France, so they no longer view us as destination number 1 and risk the journey. Before brexit we had safe and legal return mechanisms so deaths due to dangerous boat crossings were in the tens, rather than the thousands we have now. We need the ability to move freely and to trade without barriers.
If you are a rejoiner come help us fight at r/rejoinEU. So we can get back to normal.

Rejoining the EU would be a disaster, for the same reason we left.

EU members use the EU for the benefit of their countries.
UK politicians use the UK for the benefit of the EU.

If we had a decent political class, we could have stayed. Or made Brexit work.

      But we don’t .

    5. You’re new to this arent you…

It will be discussed, and swiftly mentioned that the Uk voted with confidence in the referendum to leave the EU. We wont be joining again. A petition is not a public vote but a way of bringing pressing issues into parliament.

    6. Big_Championship_BWC on

Didn’t we vote on this already. I mean just let it go and carry on with your lives. There is no will from Labour or Conservative party to rejoin, the Lib Dems do but I don’t see them forming a government ever.

    7. I don’t think the EU are going to give us any of the perks we had before. When the details of EU membership are made clear, I don’t think voters will want it.

    8. FallenBleak5 on

The EU will not allow the UK to rejoin until all major political parties are pro-EU. Why let us back in when Labour are in power, if the risk of the tories winning the next election and dismantle our reentry?

    9. Purple_Feature1861 on

I will definitely be doing this, I don’t think it will work but it will at least show the government we’re interested in it.

    10. This is not the time to be wanting to reenter the EU. Have you been at all seeing how fragmented it is?

    11. hue-166-mount on

Actually this is not a great time for this. Trump is likely to target the EU with tariffs and we are getting a rare upside of being out of the customers union – it doesn’t affect us. Until the trump stuff is gone we need to avoid this debate.

    12. Capped_Delts on

Why are we talking about this? As a nation, we voted on it and that needs to be respected. I dont think we’d get a favourable deal. Besides that, it would make us look weak and ineffective if we rejoin after such a short period of time.

We shouldn’t have left the EU imo, but what’s done is done. Move on.

    13. If we rejoined, I imagine the EU would make an example out of us so that no other member ever tries to leave.

    14. I_ALWAYS_UPVOTE_CATS on

Yawn. I’d rather they attended something that might actually resolve the UK’s issues.

    15. Pretending like we are ready to rejoin when Reform is rampant is really delusional, I voted remain and even I see it’s still not time for this topic to even be close to discussion.

    16. The use by the OP of online Drippy “OI Me Bleedin’ Blighty” really makes this whole conversation so authentic and knowledgeable about Leave or Brexit or Referendums.

      “Dontcha know it?”

The use of “over-familiarity” bro/mate/fam adds the final hors d’oeuvres, in the comments, though actively engaging in the conversation is admirable.

Tik Tok Brexit, enters the conversation!

To understand what joining the Political Union really means vs say Single Market access in some form might help the OP first understand the issue correctly before championing a given direction of travel.

    17. I’d really rather not reopen an argument that only deepens political tensions at a time we need practical cooperation with European allies. We should be finding common ground in defence, security and trade, not wasting time pushing moves that are deeply contentious

    18. It gets debated for about 10 seconds and then Parliament moves on. This isn’t the first time this petition has received enough signatures and it won’t be the last. I won’t say it’s “pointless” but it is futile.

Voting Lib Dem is the only practical way available to you right now if you hope to one day have the UK rejoin the EU. Even they expect it to be decades before we do though

    19. caughtyalookin73 on

The whole Brexit thing was a Russian paid operation. They are still funding Farage et al

    20. As a Dutchman currently the EU gets a lot of hate so I wouldn’t join it because according to Trump “EU is made to screw the USA” Trump would like to remain playing us against each other just like China and Russia does with its neighbours

If you join you too would face tariffs if you don’t you stand alone when the economic sanctions come for you

    21. Sufficient-Drama-150 on

EU wouldn’t have us back at the moment as they know that as soon as a RW government gets in, they will pull us back out again.

    22. As a German I would welcome the UK back in the EU with open arms. I think you guys belong in the EU.

    23. GreatBritishHedgehog on

I voted to remain but this is a democratic country and most people voted to leave.

      Deal with it.

We have other issues to solve and rejoining the EU now would be undemocratic and impractical.

Plus it wouldn’t solve most of our economic problems. Yes trade is down but our economy is 80% services and they are actually up to the EU since Brexit.

Can we just move on please

    24. Would love to but we’ve tried so many times with petitions, just for them to be ignored. I don’t see the UK rejoining the EU unless Starmer can get some nice terms because of his leadership in Ukrainian defence
