So had the USSR continued for a few more years Kazakhstan might’ve been just be another republic in the Russian Federation? All that potassium!
Wild how the demographics flipped over time! Russians peaked around the late Soviet era, but then Kazakhs surged after independence. Also, shoutout to the Germans. Came out of nowhere mid-century and then almost vanished.
Missing from historical context is [Asharshylyk](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kazakh_famine_of_1930%E2%80%931933?wprov=sfti1#)— the artificially imposed famine by Russians that killed 38-42% of ethnic Kazakhs, which preceded the Ukrainian holodomor.
Kazakhs have quite unique demographics – relatively high income and education level and also high birth rates. Another exception like this is Israel, which has large religious orthodox community.
