A new God of War side-story project may be on the way later this year. The rumor comes after it was previously suggested that classic God of War games could be remastered for the franchise’s 20th anniversary.

Industry insider Jeff Grubb posted on his Bluesky account recently to share more information about the God of War project, revealing that it won’t actually be a remaster collection but a “new side-story project”. “Everyone keeps asking me about this, so I’ve tried to find out more: There’s still a Greek God of War thing coming out this year, but it’s not a remaster collection. It’s a new side-story project,” Grubb wrote.

Grubb later went on to clarify rumors of God of War’s rumored 20th anniversary remaster collection. “I was never told about a Remaster collection, but I asked a source about the rumors (that I saw were focused on a collection), and they told me that nothing God of War would happen at the State of Play, but something could show up at the anniversary.” Sony is already celebrating God of War’s 20th anniversary with special in-game loot for Ragnarök and sales on previous installments in the franchise.

If the rumors turn out to be true, it will mark the return to Greek mythology for the popular video game franchise for the first time in over ten years. In 2018, the game transitioned to a Norse mythology era with God of War, the sequel to 2010’s God of War III. 2022’s God of War: Ragnarök stayed within the Norse realm, and has been confirmed to conclude the Norse era for the series.

Exact details about the rumored side-story project remain a mystery at this time, but new leaks and details are likely to emerge in the near future. If not a remaster of earlier games in the series, the return to Greek mythology in God of War could easily be a prequel game or even a reboot.

With Greek and Norse mythology already explored, the next main entry in the God of War franchise will be heading in an exciting new direction. Earlier this year, a leak revealed that Sony was looking for Middle Eastern actors for an “unknown AAA game”, likely for a new God of War game with an Egyptian setting.
