From my personal experience Europeans are also quite racist towards Georgians or at least xenophobic.
I’m not sure how Georgians are more or less racist than Europeans, for example.

Europeans being racist isn’t an excuse for us to be racist.
The reality is that no European cares about Georgia. Progressive Georgians are not racist but some extra-conservative nationalistic people could be seen as racist.
idk maybe when a person orders something they expect to be able to speak with the courier??
i shouldn’t have to learn Hindi or English or any other language to order something in my own country.
>why don’t they learn English
ignorant statement, do these people even know that they’re in a foreign country
and tourists getting harassed needs some source otherwise it’s BS
People under 30-35 years old are most likely to have no problem with your skin color. Older generation are more racist and conservative. Surely both have their exceptions so you should be very careful with anyone, especially elderly people
Tough question. Every once in a while you see such posts come up on the sub but in daily life you don’t see anything like it. But then again… If it doesn’t happen in front of your eyes doesn’t mean it’s non-existent.
Nonsense. Georgians are not racists by definition! However, they are xenophobic ONLY TO some countries.
How can I prove it? Well… There are green eyed pale skinned Georgians from Samegrelo and Tusheti and they are regarded as any other Georgians – Just like there are Georgians with black hair, black eyes and dark non-pale/dark skin, in khakheti and Qartli etc and THEY TOO are regarded as Georgians 100%
– It has nothing to do with race/skin color/eye color/ hair color etc etc.
You can be pale and green eyed or dark looking like a Persian and be an average Georgian.
xenophobia = having or showing a dislike of or prejudice against people from certain/other countries. (NOT other races)
I dare you to name even a one single *’brown’ country that is not xenophobic*! – you can’t!
People of color are xenophobic to other people of color – and we can’t pretend otherwise.
Even light-skin africans are xenophobic agains dark skin africans and vice versa. Even when they are all black – looks up **Tutsi** genocide lol.
Indians have a caste system where they refer to some of their OWN countrymen as ‘untouchables'(stone age lol)
Saying ‘Georgians(or any other nation) are *this* or *that*’ is by very definition xenophobic!
So before anyone says how Georgians are hostile against some foreigners – look into the mirror first and see your own caste systems and your own BS racial victim card/superiority nonsense.
We are all the same, everybody dislikes somebody.
And before anyone says anything about low education or low intelligence – Look at isra.el and look at Japan – they are the highest IQ and most educated nations – ask yourself, are they too xenophobic? Spoiler alert: Hell Yeah! (Nanjing Massacre… Palestine etc etc)
With all these examples in the world – Georgia appears to be rather open minded.
I’ve never heard animosity towards Georgians in Europe, though of course I’m not Georgian and cannot comment on experience. Honestly in the UK they’re quite an unknown people but those who travel there have very positive experiences.
My man, listen here. We got an older generation that’s completely brainwashed by Russian propaganda. They’re literally pulling the country down, dismantling our independence, and erasing any hope for our future.
They don’t like Georgians either, you think they care about foreigners?! Also let’s not pretend that other countries aren’t like that and the whole world is a nice place. I’m pretty sure we’re way nicer than the vast majority of other countries, especially ones in or close to our region.
Also saying why don’t they learn English is crazy.
Big respect to that guy’s dedication to learn Georgian though!
this isn’t a popular opinion but I would argue younger Georgians are more racist cause they’re more exposed to western media
From my observations, Georgians and other Caucasus people are highly tribal. This comes accross as racism but it is more complex than that.
* For instance, take Village X with multiple areas – people often argue over trivial things like whose mountain is better. The same happens in cities, where residents of different districts tend to look down on each other and even fight.
* Within a group of Village X, people tend to dislike those from Village Y, believing that Village X is somehow superior.
* At a regional level, Imeretians often stereotype Svanetians as dumb, while Kakhetians claim that Khevsuri people lack iodine. Megrelians boast about being more attractive than Gurians, whereas Gurians pride themselves on being the most intelligent. You get the idea.
* Zooming out, within a country, there’s a strong divide between East and West, with mutual disdain!
* On an international level, there’s noticeable prejudice against Armenians and Azerbaijanis.
* Broadening the perspective to the entire Caucasus region, many perceive themselves as superior to Italians, for instance. I often hear remarks like, Where were the Europeans when Georgians were writing The Knight in the Panther’s Skin?
* And on a wider European level, Georgians tend to see Asians as lesser. This pattern continues endlessly until it ultimately reaches racial distinctions based on skin colour.
It’s fascinating to observe this as an outsider. In the UK, we have a North South divide, but it’s nothing compared to the deep rooted divisions in the Caucasus. However, we do experience classism, which is less prevalent here.
I love Georgia, but racism is a real issue. I hope by time this issue will be resolved and we will have more open minded and progressive youth and we will all coexist peacefully.
Honestly I have seen a lot of hate directed to Indian people from a lot of European countries recently, what you guys think causes it? Maybe someone has deeper understanding on whats going on, would love to hear your insights.
I think that making fun of people who work is really shallow, no matter the race, ethnicity or occupation, however i do understand the point of view of people who are Georgians, live in Georgia and speak only Georgian. When they order food or taxi, they should be able to communicate with the service provider in their own language in their own country. Not everyone in Georgia speaks English and if I did not speak English, it would be very frustrating for me to not be able to communicate with the person that delivers my food and can not locate my address, in such situations, both parties are frustrated, its waste of time and energy for both of them.
I genuinely hope, tourists from all countries and races will enjoy their trip in Georgia and have a safe and positive stay. We – Georgians – also travel and some of us immigrated and live abroad and we want to be respected, we should respect others too.
About Europeans hating Kartvelians: as usual the racism is just hate based upon racial stereotypes and those stereotypes come from negative interactions. For example I’m from Poland and the number 1 foreigners caught doing crime are Kartvelians and by a big margin. There’s even a rumor that there are so many new kartvelian restaurants and bakeries because those are fronts for organized crime. This will obviously create a stereotype of Kartvelians being criminals.
Similar thing happened with Arabs, but those are mostly based upon news and rumours about them doing crime based on their religion.
Annual georgians are racist post love it
This is very sad 😢
The truth is that Georgia has a strong ideological divide. modern open minded people are pretty great, not racist or xenophobic at all, they usually don’t make problems but try to solve them.
They are however contrasted by the old fashioned reactionaries that are scared by the new culture and don’t see themselves in it. Maybe due to lack of skills or education or even the will to adapt to the new circumstances. They just hate everything new that threatens their old fashioned simplicity. I sometimes feel like they’re offended if you attempt to make them think critically about something, as if they don’t want to hear anything that might change their mind or alter their imagined reality.
Your second sentence in the title:
How alleged European racism towards Georgians correlates with alleged Georgian racism towards people of color?
Are you looking for ways to justify alleged racism?
Georgia is very racist. It’s a big problem we need to accept and deal with. Europe is a continent. Western Europeans, for example Germans, are on average much less racist than Georgians.
Its mostly elder people who were born during soviet era who are racist. You cant ask grandparants aged people to learn new language. New gen are mostly joking.
this is coming from a Georgian, I have noticed my family becoming quite racist towards POCs, it was just a sudden shift and I have no idea where it came from.
they at first started badmouthing young Indians that came into the country to study, but then it slowly transitioned to just hating all people of colour(black, asian etc), such as in films and media, politics of other countries, etc.
I have no idea why this is happening, I always call them out on this moronic behavior but there is only so much I can do.
its stupid that they are putting their hate towards people that have done nothing wrong when there are perfectly viable targets for their aggression in the illegitimate ruling party that has fucked them over countless times.
but no, logic doesn’t work on racists.
and yes, Europeans and even the rest of the world are a bit racist towards Georgians and the Caucasian people as a whole. its just the world we live in sadly.
If he speaks 5 languages (which he probably doesn’t) then learning Georgian shouldn’t be a problem. The other problem is that indians are notoriously rude, ignore personal space, and sexually harass women (have personal experiences with this as well).
We get called racist but it’s really religious xenophobia.
Copts are largely liked here, and they are browner then most middle easterners
I never heard heard about Georgians complain about being victim racism.
Altho I wouldn’t be surprised if Polish could be xenophobic towards us. We earned ourselves reputation there lately
Why do we take Georgians as a monolith when discussing this?
There are good people and bad people in all ages and nationalities.
