Switzerland has opened its humanitarian office in Kabul to provide targeted aid to the people of Afghanistan facing severe distress.
The Swiss Ministry of Foreign Affairs has announced the reopening of its Development and Cooperation Agency office in Kabul. On Monday, March 31, the Ministry issued a statement confirming that the office had officially reopened in mid-March. This move marks a significant step in Switzerland’s renewed engagement with Afghanistan after a period of closure due to the Taliban’s return to power.
Currently, the office is staffed with four experts from Switzerland’s humanitarian assistance unit, along with 10 local employees. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasized that the main goal of this presence is to provide support to the most vulnerable people in Afghanistan. This includes working with local partners to address critical humanitarian needs across the country.
In its statement, the Swiss Ministry highlighted the severity of Afghanistan’s ongoing humanitarian crisis, describing it as one of the worst in the world. More than four years after the Taliban regained control, over half of Afghanistan’s population remains dependent on humanitarian aid. The situation continues to deteriorate, exacerbating the challenges faced by those already living in precarious conditions.
Switzerland’s priorities in Afghanistan include providing humanitarian aid, supporting civil society, especially women and girls, and ensuring food security in rural areas. The Ministry stressed that these areas of focus are vital to stabilizing the country and improving the living conditions of its most marginalized communities. The Swiss government aims to address both immediate and long-term challenges to help rebuild Afghanistan’s social infrastructure.
According to the statement, Switzerland’s humanitarian efforts are being carried out in collaboration with international and local non-governmental organizations, the International Committee of the Red Cross, UN agencies, and the World Bank. The cooperative approach ensures that aid reaches those most in need, leveraging the expertise and resources of various global partners.
The Swiss Ministry also disclosed that the agency’s annual budget for operations in Afghanistan stands at 25 million Swiss Francs. This funding will support various projects aimed at alleviating suffering and promoting sustainable development in the country. Switzerland’s continued financial and logistical support reflects its commitment to addressing Afghanistan’s humanitarian needs in the face of ongoing political challenges.
