The Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Policies for Bulgarians Abroad, Stoyan Taslakov, has formally requested from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs a report on the detention of more than 20 vehicles with Bulgarian license plates by police in Kavadarci, North Macedonia, the Committee announced on Wednesday.
The request seeks information on the legal grounds for the detention, the exact number of vehicles involved and diplomatic actions taken to protect the rights of Bulgarian citizens, the Bulgarian news agency BTA reports. KosovaPress.
A response is expected from the Bulgarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which may also request an official position from the North Macedonian authorities. A reaction will also be sought at the European Union level to see whether the fundamental principles of the Treaty on Friendship, Good Neighborliness and Cooperation between the two neighboring states are being violated.
The Chairman of the Committee expressed concern that cases in which the rights of Bulgarian citizens are being violated are increasing in North Macedonia and even MPs have been denied entry to the country.
Taslakov stressed that, if the necessary and appropriate measures are not taken in a timely manner and the hate speech and harassment by the authorities of the Republic of North Macedonia are not put to an end, there is a great risk that the rights of Bulgarian citizens will be violated again and again, calling into question the principles of the rule of law and European values in the region.
