4 years since Osmani’s election as president of Kosovo
The Assembly of the Republic of Kosovo, in an extraordinary session, on April 4, 2021, elected Vjosa Osmani as president of the country with 71 votes ‘in favor’.
Osmani was elected after the third round of voting, where 82 MPs voted. 71 of the MPs voted for Osmani, 11 votes were invalid, while no MP voted for the other candidate Nasuf Bejta. Before the third round, the procedure of two rounds, the first and the second, was also carried out.
In the first round, 81 MPs voted. 69 MPs voted for Vjosa Osmani, 12 votes were declared invalid, while Nasuf Bejta did not receive any votes. Based on this result, it was determined that none of the candidates had the necessary votes to be elected president, as required by the Constitution of the Republic of Kosovo.
In the second round, 81 MPs voted. 67 MPs voted for candidate Vjosa Osmani, 11 invalid votes, while Nasuf Bejta received 4 votes. Even after the second round, none of the candidates received enough votes to be elected president.
After the results of the third round of voting were announced, the President of the Republic of Kosovo, Vjosa Osmani, took the oath of office before the members of the Assembly of the Republic of Kosovo, and then the national anthem of the Republic of Kosovo was played in the hall. Upon being elected president, Vjosa Osmani delivered a speech before the members of the Assembly, reports KosovaPress.
President Osmani in her speech gave a message to girls and women across the country, telling them that everything is possible when they dream and work for the realization of their dreams.
“Your will, dear citizens, expressed on February 14 and today’s decision of the Assembly, burdens me with a lot of responsibility. Love for Kosovo and our compatriots has been the greatest motivation during political life. Today is the day of Kosovo, it is your day, where your will is being fulfilled and the institutions are being fully constituted. Dear citizens, today Kosovo once again elected a woman president. Girls have a decision only where they want, where they dream every night and what they work hard for”, declared the president of the Republic of Kosovo at that time.
In her speech to the deputies, President Osmani praised the work of the former president of Kosovo, Ibrahim Rugova, the work of the commander of the Kosovo Liberation Army, Adem Jashari, all the martyrs of the nation and the sacrifice of all to create the state.
“Today we remember the role of the architect of our state, Ibrahim Rugova, who gave politics its most valuable dimension, the human dimension. Our story is a story of dedication. Let’s remember today our heroes who had the freedom of the country as their most precious life ideal. Today we remember the bravery of commander Adem Jashari, every soldier of the KLA, the Jashari family, the martyrs and heroes, all the missing, the many martyrs”, said President Osmani, among other things.
After Osman’s speech, the extraordinary session for the election of the President of the Republic of Kosovo, which began the day before, on April 3, concluded its proceedings.
