This is the single most important task for the government (along with energy).
We have the most expensive housing and energy of any developed country, by a large margin.
Solve this and you not only solve the cost of living crisis, but make the whole economy more efficient and productive.

The key to this is having a permissive planning system that enables development to happen quickly.

If they pull off even 1 million they deserve a lot of praise. I can’t see any hope they get 1.5mil given the incoming recession. Companies just won’t build
AdNorth70 on
They’re not even close to on target, and the ONS has been counting motor homes too.

Not enough in the first place, doubly not enough with the droves of people coming here cap in hand who’ll have them first over British born.
Plus, they’ll probably be made cheaply, poorly and rushed and riddled with problems.

I think we will reach the target. Seems those 1.5 million houses are all built in Warwickshire. It’s a huge building site next to HS2 works.
On a second thought we should also chop down everything and tarmac the whole region – will improve parking.

She may be determined, but determination will not solve the problem. Hope this does not end up like the previous Tory housing promises.

Make it illegal for companies to buy up and rent our homes ! Blackstone is buying up our homes, Vietnam’s pension is buying up our homes and a lot more conglomerates ffs

Good because building these homes will help the economy.

This is what we need in government. No excuses. Shit happens. We will get it done.
With the Tories if a budgie farted in reading, that would be justification enough for cancelling an infrastructure project in the North.

I’m just wondering for whose budgets they are going to build/price those houses?
I have a feeling that people who are diligently saving while paying rent on top and getting no help from anyone will get f*cked over again while they will be also rewarded by the fact that they can pay Stamp duty since the housing market makes sure not to miss out on ripping off people in some shape or form.
I mean if you want to get a new build for example and the price tag is just about right, then later you slowly start to realize that on top of that you’d need to pay at least 5k that you don’t have lying around as you’ll need to turf your own garden, tile the bathroom, do the fucking flooring/carpeting on your own, etc because at the end of the day you realize not much is included in that price tag.
And then pay for the extraorbitant legal fees and charged extra for buying a new build, etc., you need to find out what’s your council tax band you’ll be assigned to and just hope it won’t be the worst, but there is no guarantee.
Buying a pre-loved house is also not that much better, with the advantage of taking longer to actually buy the house and at the end of the day you pay out the same amount of money , but you call it survey instead.
So far the below reflects my experience with the used market:
Dealing with EAs who got no clue about the details of the house who are just acting on behalf of sellers who haven’t even managed to put at least a lick of new paint on the walls since the 80s, and has the boiler, bathroom /kitchen from the same era, but they think it still worth over 300 grand and won’t budge because “ThATs hoW mUcH the other one on the street was sold for!”(even if that was a bigger house with better specs and was sold for that price 5 years ago).
So you can start with ripping out either the kitchen or the bathroom or both, then notice serious defects and you’ll need to somehow materialize money again that you don’t have while paying off the mortgage and you are being kept under the illusion that it’ll be fine and the house that is in real terms a money pit will be a good investment for the future. The latter might be true but I’d rather just enjoy my time in my home rather than chasing the invested time and money by rebuilding the house slowly for someone else.
So what I expect is that these houses again won’t be for the normal people, but mainly for the 2 end of the financial spectrum(either too expensive, so for the rich, either too poor so for the needy who will need to jump through hoops) and the one in the middle will get ripped off as usual.
Rant over.

Problem is they’ll all be luxury flats and McMansions that nobody can afford to live in. Or renta-hovels owned by SlumLords, Inc.
Abolish right to buy and build social housing. Anything else is just begging the private sector to do more work for less money, something they are generally reluctant to do

One target Labour may hit is the fastest growth in the G7.
With the US nuking its own economy & Canada in particular, together with poorer growth already forecast for the rest of the G7 with tariffs now laid on top too.
Not that this is particularly positive, just the least worst.

And when does she solve the issue of no more doctors or dentists? Or school places? A town near me has 450 new houses being build on the outskirts. There are two doctors surgeries in the town, one of them has one single doctor. The other has several doctors but is so overwhelmed with patients that it’s impossible to get an appointment.
There’s a single NHS dentist there, but they haven’t been taking on new patients for 12 years.
The roads also can’t cope, because the town was never designed for that much traffic.
