publicist Veton Surroi has said that Kosovo should maintain relations with the United States of America because, as he says, the European Union does not offer the same communication opportunities due to non-recognition by five member states.
In a conversation on the podcast PIKË on KTV, historian Florian Bieber asked Surroi whether Kosovo should make a choice between the US and the EU, given that the country’s relations with these two actors are going through a period of tension and change.
Surroi said that Kosovo’s relationship with the US is emotional, given America’s strong support for Kosovo’s independence and its key role in preserving the existence of the Kosovo state. He stressed that Kosovo is one of the most pro-American countries in the world, and this relationship has been essential to get through the challenges of the post-independence period.
However, Surroi mentioned that now, as in 1989, Kosovo must make rational decisions and determine where the world is heading. He emphasized the need for Kosovo to adapt to the historical trends of the redefinition of European identity, by committing to Euro-Atlantic integration and ensuring a functional democracy.
Surroi also stressed that the relationship with the US is necessary, as the EU does not offer the same communication opportunity due to the non-recognition of Kosovo by five member states. He added that there is no other option for Kosovo than to continue with strong relations with the US, while Kosovo’s commitment to integration into the European Union must remain an irreplaceable priority.
