CLIFTON, Colo. (KJCT) – As part of National Public Health Week, Mesa County Public Health (MCPH) hosted the Public Health Hero Awards on April 9.

“It’s to celebrate all of our public health workers who come in day and night, some weekends, and they do the work for the community to save lives, to give vaccinations, to track down communicable diseases, to help our single mothers and our families,” said Xavier Crockett, Executive Director of MCPH.

Members of Mesa County and the Public Health Department gathered at the Clifton Community Center to celebrate the vital role their employees play in the community. Mesa County Commissioner Bobbie Daniel said this night was about gratitude.

“Public health, healthcare in general, and healthcare workers have been through a lot the last couple of years, and to have space and be in a place where we can all come together and just be thankful is really special for Mesa County,” said Daniel.

The ceremony presented “exemplary people and organizations” with the Public Health Hero Award. The award was given to individuals and organizations committed to public health and safety.

Honorees included:

  • Spanish Advisory Group
  • Alisha Wenger, Community Food Bank
  • Dr. Phil Mohler, Good Samaritan Free Clinic of Western Colorado
  • Diana Martinez, B4 Babies
  • Stephania Vazconez, Mutual Aid Partners

Crocket has a message for the honorees and staff of Public Health.

“Thank you. I have been here a little over a year without the team, there is no success in the work that we do for the Community, said Crockett. “Thank you for all your hard work. Thank you for your long hours and thank you for dedicating yourself to the citizens of Mesa County.”
