TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Deputy Legislative Speaker Johnny Chiang (江啟臣) welcomed the visiting Luxembourg parliamentary delegation to the Legislative Yuan on Wednesday.
The delegation arrived in Taiwan on Sunday for talks on bilateral relations and trade. This is the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic that lawmakers from Luxembourg have organized a cross-party delegation to Taiwan.
During a luncheon, Chiang said the two countries should work together on sustainable development, according to the Legislative Yuan.
He thanked the Luxembourg parliament and government for their continuous support of Taiwan’s participation in global organizations such as the World Health Organization and the World Health Assembly. He also expressed gratitude to the European country for standing with Taiwan in defending freedom and democracy.
The deputy speaker hoped that Luxembourg would continue backing Taiwan’s international participation and enhancing bilateral economic and trade ties.
Luxembourg lawmaker and delegation leader, Stephanie Weydert, pointed out that all four members of the group were visiting Taiwan for the first time. Everyone was deeply impressed by Taiwan’s progress and the warmth and friendliness of Taiwanese, Weydert said.
She welcomed growing exchanges between Taiwanese and Luxembourg businesses and cooperation in other fields. Taiwan and Luxembourg share the values of democracy and human rights and should work together to protect their hard-earned freedoms and peaceful way of life, she said.
Chiang and the delegation later held in-depth discussions on topics, including Taiwan’s international participation, cross-border cooperation, and Taiwan-Luxembourg investment.
