Why is New Mexico separated from the rest of the US-Mexico border states?

I-25 in New Mexico passes through El Paso right before Mexico. So if you actually wanted to cross the border directly you’d have to go through Deming or something and nobody’s ever willingly gone to Deming.

This is not beautiful data. This looks like a first draft of this plot. The colors are terrible. The final column seperates new mexico for no reason. The labels on the left side are so smshed at the bottom they are almost impossible to read. A bigger font size choice would likely improve readability as well
