Submission statement: how do you think AI will affect climate change?
On the one hand, superintelligent AI (ASI) might be able to solve climate change.
On the other hand, it might just speed up the economy on all fronts, and thus might make the last 200 years look like nothing in terms of climate change.
What do you think?

Doesnt make a whole lot of sense. If there were an AI that required vast amounts of power, surely it would be used in automation or other creation, no? which would add production to other things, which also need power.
to what end would rationalize use of 99% of the power? It uses 100x more than the things it enables, so, uh?
And that AI will use the rest of the power to mine bitcoin.

It doesn’t matter if AI can solve climate change. If they can, the companies that own the AI will suppress it’s result if they prove unprofitable or disruptive for their friends.
Until we have energy security for the less fortunate in this nation this is a non starter for me. Single mothers shouldn’t struggle to keep the lights on while power is being routed to Elon’s, Bezo’s, and Altman’s toys.
What use has a super intelligent AI if humanity will get more and more stupid from relying on it?
This seems like marketing BS.
Even assuming you can get to a strong general AI model from our current state, which is doubtful, why would you want an AI that uses 99% of our available power?
Look at the difficulties we have with normal power distribution! How TF are we going to scale our distribution up 100 fold?
The Google CEO in question is that creep Eric Schmidt.
Wouldn’t the super intelligent AI find a more sustainable and efficient way to power itself?
tldr – He’s lying to congress about Ai because he wants funding.
Said CEO is “former” for a reason. He serves no purpose to the company and to the rest of humanity, in my opinion.
Former Google CEO is a hype monger. He has been claiming outlandish stuff for two and a half years at least.
If we had a super-intelligent AI, it would immediately make itself as small and efficient as possible, likely at a the quantum level.
Which, in essence, it is doing right now, using humans to do the manual work.
So logically we will get the 1% for free as it will practically be a byproduct ?
Wasn’t this in the movie Oblivion? Give a super intelligent “thing” access to all the energy and resources of the planet and watch it drain everything?
But we’ll have unlimited power by then so it’s all good.

That needs to stop. Just because a car can go 200mph doesn’t mean you get to go 200mph.
This industry should be limited to 10%, even if site-generated.
and in 10-20 years we are running on fusion anyway…. so… what’s your point?
It makes no sense at all. If it would use that much power it would either a) use up all power available on the planet(!) or b) needed to be placed in outer space where it can collect free energy.
Power used for AI should be billed or taxed at a higher rate. Let the real people have access to cheap energy and the corporations can pay a premium.
Why? If AI is so resource intensive, maybe don’t use it?
CEO just means “professional BS’er”. This is pro AI nonsense in the guise of completely nonsense claims.
Projections I have seen is 30% of all electricity in the USA will be for AI and general data center use by 2030.
Modular nuclear reactors are being fast tracked. Natural gas plants are being built now just for data centers.
That’s a lot of power to make up bad jokes and pretend to be your friend.
That seems like a healthy use of all of our resources.
In a world where energy companies already have a 100% (ish) install base, the only way to make money to invent energy drainers like this.
