This tsipoura fish was priced at 79€ per kg. They showed us the fish uncooked they said it was small, but we approved. It was not more than 500g raw. The image is the fish cooked, stripped of the bones and untouched by us. Does this look like it came from 1kg fish? Because we were charged 74€, like it was almost a kilo. They didn’t care to do anything, just said it was a kilo and they charged us fairly.

On markets It’s 9.7 per kilo even less.
Welcome to Greece
pay up
I thought they told you it was 500 gr
Sounds fair
was it gold plated or what
LOL, 79 euros per kg for a fish farm sea bream of 7 euros per kg? I expect it was served on a gold plate and was sprinkled with pearls.
Of course you were scammed.
Could you put something for scale? I can’t tell the size.
if this plate is untouched by you this is a disrespectful plating, it is dirty, it’s missing the fourth stripe of the second side upper fillet..
..now it could cost 74 euros even if it is more than expensive for that, but depends where did you eat that…mukonos, santorini, Athens, sparti etc every place comes with a different price.
in general ask for the fish to be separated from the bones in front of you and evade tourist traps (use google maps and check out reviews)
Usually they weight the fish up front, or you ask to weight it in front of your.
You ordered something, you did no due diligence on your part and now you ask internet strangers to weight a fish from a picture.
You learned your lesson. Pay up and move on.
Everything happened tonight is on you.
Yes it’s a rip off , but not because you are tourists (probably ), eating out in Greece , especially in “traditional” taverna, is like throwing money down the drain …
It’s frustrating for us locals as well…
Usually those range from 700gr-1kg and cost 25-45€/kg(not fish farm), double the price in restaurants. Cant really tell the size from the picture.
You were totally scammed yes. Not only because of the weight. Because Tsipoura (Dorado) is as common as seabass. You need to do better research what it is that you are ordering to eat. But honestly, you’d be lucky to find good restaurants in touristic places. 9/10 will aim to scam you just like this one did.
Ass Rapped
A wild tsipoura costs this much in “high end ” restaurants( i just checked the menu of a well known fish restaurant in thessaloniki and its 79e/kg). This is indeed shocking to for most people (myself included). It is ridiculously overpriced but i dont think you were scammed.
Yes it’s too expensive. There are other fishes that cost that much but not this particular one.
For those who ask this is in Thessaloniki, a seaside restaurant with 4+ stars rating on Google.
Usually when you get to see the fish raw they also weigh it in front of you. In your case I imagine this did not happen. Next time be prepared
First of all 80 euros per kilo is crazy price and also this looks small. Basically you got scammed all the way.
Yes, you were scammed. Where is the rest of the fish?
It all depends on whether the fish was wild or farmed.
If it was wild, then the price, although at the high end, was not a scam. If it was farmed, its price at the market is around 10euros/kg, so that would be an absolute scam.
The question here is how do you know if it was wild or farmed? If they are scammers they might have served you farmed fish at the price of the wild. Unless you are very experienced with fish you can’t can really tell just by the looks of it.
If you are experienced with fish and are confident that the fish was wild then although the price sounds ridiculous, it does reflect the market value of the wild tsipoura (30-50euros/kg).
Are you sure this was not 7,9 with the comma missing, and because you didn’t laugh straight in the waiters face, they thought this price seemed reasonable to you and just went along with it?
What the actual megafuck price is that? Yes ofc you were scammed! It’s a sea bream. The price is a dead giveaway that they’re exploiting their customers. 79€/kg while it normally costs less than 8€ retail, which means they get it even cheaper… omg their profit margin. Also, why is the poor fish butchered like that? My four year old nephew can be more elegant than this. Honestly, my eyes! Would you share the store’s name / location?
Here are my findings:
After giving the menu another look (online). I discovered that the Greek menu clearly states Wild, and the english menu didn’t mention this. Being newbies in the fish world, me and my friend couldn’t make the difference and know for sure it was wild since we’ve never had that particular fish. To me it did have a specific taste, but didn’t dwell on it. The price may have been fine for that price. But the weight issue persists and not being specific on the English menu. Plus this is something that the waiter should mention – but seems like their way of scamming foreigners.
You were definitely ripped off. That would cost 4-5 euros at the market so at most 12 to 15 euros on your plate.
A good lesson for you about what tourist trap means
Please be careful of scams like this. Always ask for a receipt, too. If they deny, then you are not required to pay
Nobody cares tourist, suck it up.
Live your myth in Greece.
is that a trilobite ?
