I conducted a phonemic analysis of budgie vocalizations, categorizing audio clips into seven different call types and clustering their syllables into distinct phonemes (labeled A–H). The attached visualization shows how these phonemes distribute across various budgie behaviors.
Notable Findings:
- Distress and Begging Calls frequently share phoneme C, suggesting this phoneme might indicate urgency or unmet needs.
- Contact Calls predominantly feature phoneme D, implying a role in individual recognition or flock identification.
- Aggressive/Territorial Calls exhibit a high frequency of phoneme E, possibly indicating territorial claims or social dominance. Interestingly, phoneme E is also found moderately in Contentment Calls, perhaps representing comfort or security in territory or companionship.
- Social Chatter and Courtship Calls demonstrate the widest range of phonemes, indicating complex communication patterns related to social interactions.

**Data Sources:**
* Personal collection of budgie audio recordings, supplemented with publicly available clips from YouTube and TikTok, manually categorized by observed budgie behaviors.
**Tools Used:**
* Python: Librosa for audio feature extraction, Scikit-learn (KMeans clustering), Matplotlib (visualizations).
