MUMBAI: India marked a proud moment internationally as four bright Indian students secured medals at the 14th European Girls’ Mathematical Olympiad (EGMO) 2025, held in Prishtina, Kosovo, from April 11 to 17. Nearly 60 nations participated in the event, and the Indian contingent achieved an impressive 12th place finish overall.
Among the team, 15-year-old Shreya Mundhada from Mumbai and 16-year-old Sanjana Chacko from Kerala clinched silver medals. Meanwhile, Saee Patil (18) from Pune and Shreya Gupta (18) from Kolkata bagged bronze medals for their outstanding performances.
Launched in 2012 in the UK, EGMO is an annual international contest that encourages high school girls to explore mathematics beyond textbooks. India’s selection process is rigorous, beginning with the Regional Mathematics Olympiad (RMO), then the Indian National Mathematical Olympiad (INMO), and finally, a training camp to select the top four.
“Mathematics isn’t just about numbers—it’s about visualizing concepts,” said Gupta, who is set to study math and computer science at Chennai Mathematical Institute. Patil, inspired by her late-night problem-solving ideas, is also pursuing similar academic goals.
Months of disciplined training led each girl to discover their unique strategy for solving complex problems. “Everyone has their own method,” said Chacko, who narrowly missed the gold by just one point.
At the airport, the girls received a warm send-off, and their success was met with celebrations back home. Mandhada and Chacko are eligible to return next year—with gold in sight.
