Greece has completed the second phase of its military restructuring plan, closing or merging 21 army units as part of efforts to cut costs and streamline operations, the defence ministry said.
The closures will affect units in Macedonia, Thrace, Thessaly, Central Greece, the Peloponnese and the Aegean islands. Since the end of 2024, 31 units have been deactivated. A further 106 are expected to close by the end of 2025 as part of the final stages of the plan.
Officials said the changes target inactive or low-priority units, helping to reduce operating costs and redirect resources. The plan is expected to save 1.7 billion euros over the next decade.
The restructuring also supports pay increases of 13% to 20% for military personnel and the construction of 5,000 housing units for service members by 2030.
Defence officials said the changes would not affect readiness in border areas, where key National Guard units will be strengthened.
