LITTLE ROCK, (KATV) — African American men are facing a mental health crisis, with suicide rates four times higher than their female counterparts, according to the National Alliance on Mental Health.
To address this pressing issue, Dr. Bridget Winfrey, owner of Purpose Found Inc., is hosting the second annual Black Men’s Worship, Spiritual Care, and Mental Health Day this Saturday.
Dr. Winfrey said, “What we do is we provide spiritual care and mental health awareness for the community through conferences, art therapy, fitness events, dance drama, and prayer services.”
Taking place in Little Rock at the Wyndham Riverfront Hotel from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., the event aims to break the stigma surrounding mental health.
Dr. Winfrey explained that trust issues, lack of healthcare access, and social determinants like lower socioeconomic conditions contribute to the crisis.
Adding a unique twist, the event will feature a signed football by Johnny Rogers, a former Heisman Trophy winner, as a fundraiser.
“The highest donors will receive this football signed by Johnny Rogers, and the funds will be given back to the mental health community,” said Dr. Winfrey.
Attendees can look forward to keynote speaker Dr. Fitzgerald Hill discussing local issues like homicide and juvenile delinquency.
The day will also include music therapy with jazz artist Rodney Block, gospel artist Marcus Jordan, and Bishop Avery delivering a sermon.
Dr. Winfrey encourages everyone to join the event, promising a day filled with activities, music therapy, journaling, and a variety of vendors. “I just welcome everyone to come out,” she said.
