The moon is literally excluded in the definition of phrase “deep space”.

And it looks as though China will be the first to start serious development there, while Trump scuttles NASA and the space program (other than the bits that Musk wants to receive Govt handouts for)

The thing we need to be doing now is:
Asteroid Mining.
The US *should* have started Space Race 2.0. And started going all out on Asteroid mining.
We would have “brought manufacturing to the US”, created thousands of jobs, inspired a generation or three, and set Humanity up for the next great Exploration.
We **need** to find a way to 1, get materials in space, and 2 get materials *from* space. The Chinese launched 3…yes…3 space stations in a matter of 10 years. The first 2 were to prove the 3rd. The 3rd, which is still in space, is doing all kinds of research on Automation, station building, in situ building, etc.
China has a lot of problems that a lot of people don’t really know about in the public, especially western media, so they aren’t going to be able to achieve a lot of what they are out for. Unless we keep giving them free wins.
Let’s say this administration implodes, or 41% of americans create brain cells magically, Then the US should go full on in to this. Drop the national defense by 150 billion and start making the same shit we did in the 50s. We created whole cities to support our space race.
All research towards humans and tech in space. Get companies that make automated mining equipment to work with space companies. Get humans to a nearby passing asteroid on a known travel path. Use equipment we have now, with some of the research stuff China is doing right now. 3d printing in space, chemical processing of material to create metals, breakdown of materials to make fuel, etc. Get mining an asteroid and get the material in orbit over our moon.
Boom, resources from space, in space, ready to be used, or sent back to earth. More resources than earth has ever seen when get it up and running.
