SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (Dakota News Now) – After six years away, Avera Health brought back its NICU Reunion for nurses, former patients and their families.

The reunion was a chance for neonatal intensive care unit nurses and doctors to reunite with the children they helped take care of in the first days of their lives.

The Covid-19 pandemic had initially put a stop to the event, but the medical professionals in attendance said it’s a day they’ve been looking forward to.

“It is amazing to see all of our previous patients. You get to see them at their most vulnerable time of their lives, when they’re first born. To see them growing up and thriving today is really wonderful,” said RN Maria Hohwieler.

Kids, families and medical staff had the opportunity to play games, take photos and catch up and spend time together.
