  1. Honestly, I smell cannabis about a dozen times a day, every day. At this point, who gives a shit if someone smells like it? Its everywhere! The war on drugs was lost a loooooong time ago.

  2. Oooh I’m here before the usual gaggle of people who act as though a smell they don’t like, alone, should be reason enough to punish someone.

  3. im_actually_a_badger on

This is very old news, and very badly reported.

Police about 6+ years ago were instructed that the smell ALONE isn’t automatically sufficient grounds for a stop search (if a person is on their own in the middle of the country side, with no one else around, it might be).

But it can form part of the grounds. So for example, a person with red eyes, stumbling around, and stinks of weed, and maybe some recent intel, then smell can be included in the grounds.

If someone smells of cannabis there is reasonable expectation they are carrying it and breaking the law. I thought the police had stopped charging people for possession a long time ago.

  5. It’s why I rock with a prescription, anyone abusing me for smells gets put in their place by the police upon complaint.

Legally available in the UK since 2018 if anyone’s interested in going legal.

  6. Distinct-Injury6301 on

Good. Ive been stopped twice, legal medicinal cannabis, and it was a ball ache both times. Just leave me the fuck alone.

  7. It is so commonly used that it might as well be legalised at this point, and sold from regulated vendors a la Canada/The US/etc. Or why not take the Spanish approach, pay x per annum for membership to a club and buy/smoke your ganj there. I’ve been to Lanzarote twice and both times I joined a different club. Buy/smoke your ganj there (or at home/your hotel balcony). It was great

  8. I thought this was already part of the guidance but if this is more official, that’s a great sign.

  9. StroopWaffle00 on

    1.Legalize it
    2.tax it
    3.reduce crime rates
    4.improve medical care

    This is really one item

  10. StroopWaffle00 on

Also people complaining about the smell in public, people would also more preferably smoke in the comfort of their own home far away from you without worry of the police raiding your house for a spliff

  11. EddieHeadshot on

They need to legalise it. I’d rather have weed shops than 900 Turkish barbers or bookies.

  12. Losing battle really, can’t walk 30 minutes in Essex without smelling weed on someone walking past or an open window wafting it into the streets.

Hell, my downstairs neighbour with three kids openly smokes weed in her garden as the little ones play.

Nobody takes it seriously anymore, so why should the police. I’d rather they legalise it and go after those selling drugs. Bring the money into the country rather than some scumbags wallet.

I just wish that it didn’t stink so bad, summer is a nightmare with open windows and people smoking all kinds of shit around our block of flats. Can’t let a breeze in without flashbacks to Amsterdam.

God forbid there’s terpenes in the air disrupting your microplastic and dioxide consumption…shout about something else. Cunts

The bigger problem is that police claim they smell cannabis when they want to search someone or their car

  15. Jesus!!!!!!

Stop fucking pussyfooting about the issue FFS!

Legalise it, take the *huge* industry out of the hands of criminals, regulate the production, sale, tax it and be done.

  16. MinimumGarbage9354 on

War on drugs what a joke 5 times in 30 years a war on drugs has been pronounced and I have yet to to see other than the criminals fire the first shot.

  17. Suspicious_Sense6729 on

Why this hasn’t been legalised is beyond me. It’s the first thing I’d do if I was PM.

  18. Extreme-Refuse6274 on

Won’t they need to have bobbies on the beat to sniff people?

It’s everywhere atm, I hate the smell. I don’t think criminalising it is right but damn it needs a better smell haha

  19. Careless_Agency5365 on

They don’t really have a choice in the matter. It went through court and the courts decided you can’t use smell alone. It’s not a police decision

  20. FreshSatisfaction184 on

Just legalise it already! There is a large population that smoke it and to pretend that it being illegal does anything other than fund the police is disengenuous.
The gov would be better off taxing it. It would take the money out of the hands of the gangs as well as a bonus.

  21. Good, it’s ridiculously subjective proven by the fact they used that excuse to search 2 elite athletes who in reality were arrested for driving whilst black.

  22. InternetHomunculus on

    > Force chiefs have brought in the new policy following concerns raised by its Independent Scrutiny of Police Powers Panel whose members suggested officers were too often using the measure as a “fishing” expedition.

Its been like this for a long time. They’d just claim they can smell something so they could search some one or their vehicle without any other reason

Gotta say though I’m sick of smelling it so often. I don’t get how people can walk around smelling so strongly of it and not think anything of it

  23. ExtremelyFilthyWhore on

What a total waste of Police time, sending them off on some stupid Wild Goose Chase every time.

  24. backcountry57 on

De criminalize it and increase mandatory drug testing at work for safety related jobs.

  25. BruceForsyth55 on

I’m not a fan of the stink although I do think it should be legalised as do a lot of coppers. There are far bigger problems in the world. HOWEVER the big issue that nobody seems to think about is people driving high.

The education will need to be there if it ever is legalised because I can tell you now issues around drug drive will be an even bigger problem than drink drive.

  26. Weird-Statistician on

Fair enough but I’m always a bit concerned when I smell it while driving down the motorway

  27. SoggyWotsits on

How about the smell of it wafting from cars? Call me old fashioned but I’m not delighted about sharing the roads with drug drivers. Somehow it doesn’t seem as socially unacceptable as drink driving though.

  28. NoPotato2470 on

I got caught with it in the north of Ireland and had to give a verbal apology to the officer just 😅

  29. CandleConfidence on

Religion is often referred to as the opiate of the masses but weed is definitely the opiate of the plebs.

  30. Electric-Lamb on

Imagine if every time someone smoked weed, the government got some extra revenue

  31. pintofendlesssummer on

3 grows going on within 5 mins walk of my house. Everyone knows what houses they are except the police. Little drug dealers are 10 a penny, nick one, and his mate will take over.

  32. Pendragon1948 on

Presumably they’re too busy searching people’s trousers to make sure they’re not trans.

  33. Lost_Exchange2843 on

We’ve stopped because the government changed the rules and made us stop. Apparently someone walking past you stinking to high heaven of cannabis is no longer reasonable grounds to suspect they might be in possession of cannabis, which, regardless as to your opinion on the legality of cannabis, is absolutely absurd.

  34. kararmightbehere on

Government getting lazier. Bunch of stoners in the replies too are getting very happy. Good God sometimes we need to get draconian on them

  35. Leading_Confidence71 on

Hate the smell. Think its fucking gross. Weed has also been the cause of several family issues.

That said, its a complete waste of time policing it and its not right to search someone because they ‘smell of it’, which is arbitrary and dependant on individual officers. Who are able to lie.

Legalise it, tax it, and lets stop wasting our time on this debate.

  36. I have a presentation.

Good luck with the disability discrimination lawsuits, piggies.

  37. timothywilsonmckenna on

    Legalise it, don’t criticise it.

Legalise it and I will advertise it.

  38. Nobody ever talks about the fact cannabis use is a serious risk factor for triggering psychosis. It can also seriously exacerbate existing mental health issues. Everybody treats it like a harmless drug but it absolutely isn’t.

The smell side of it is annoying but a minor issue. You can create the same smell by leaving a bottle of beer (preferably green bottle) out in the sunlight for a few hours. Both cannabis and hops (used in brewing beer) belong to the same plant family: Cannabaceae.
