Thousands of participants from more than a dozen countries are taking part in Saturday’s race.

INDIANAPOLIS — Tens of thousands of people are taking part in the 2025 IU Health 500 Festival Mini-Marathon on Saturday, May 3.

The course starts and finishes in downtown Indianapolis and includes a lap at the legendary Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Participants can even pause to kiss the bricks.

USA Track & Field kicked things off in the Delta Dental 5K. The winners were Olin Hacker, of Flagstaff, Arizona, with a time of 13:31.93 and Josette Andrews, of Boulder, Colorado, with a time of 15:05.55.

For non-USATF, Matt Moler, of Midwest City, Oklahoma, won the Delta Dental 5K for the men, with a time of 15:24.86. Lilly Higgins, of Arcada, Indiana, won the Delta Dental 5K for the women, with a time of 18:26.45.

Holly Koester, of Walton Hills, Ohio, won the Athletes with Disabilities division.

The male winner of the 2025 IU Health 500 Festival Mini-Marathon is Brandon Olden, from Richmond, Kentucky, with a time of 1:04:39.45.

Mercy Chelangat, of Flagstaff, Arizona, is the women’s winner of the 2025 IU Health 500 Festival Mini-Marathon with a time of 1:10:31.25. Chelangat broke course record, officials said.

9:45 a.m. – Chuck Lofton reminisces on covering his final Mini-Marathon.

“You see so many volunteers helping the people, who are giving it all and have been training for months and months and months,” Chuck said. “It’s what Indiana is all about. I love it!”

9:30 a.m. – For the fourth consecutive year, Kevin Enders, of Brownsburg, ran the Mini-Marathon barefoot.

“I want to bring awareness to Mental Health Awareness Month. To any adult caregiver taking care of anyone who has Alzheimer’s or dementia, shoutout to them. Take care of yourself,” Enders said.

Scott Swan asked Enders how his feet hold up after running 13.1 miles.

“A little dirty. Just like anything, consistency over time, so now, it’s just a nice, thick pad of skin that feels like I’m running on shoes,” Enders said.

9:15 a.m. – Anne Marie Tiernon and Scott Swan chat with the “Pace Team,” who ran alongside runners and cheered them on throughout the Mini-Marathon.

9 a.m. – Holly Koester, of Walton Hills, Ohio, was the first finisher in the wheelchair and athletes with disabilities division in the Mini-Marathon.

“This was the last race that I actually ran, so I come back to do it in my racing chair to prove I can still do it,” Koester told 13News.


8:50 a.m. – In her first Mini-Marathon, Mercy Chelangat, of Flagstaff, Arizona, finished with the fastest women’s time of 1:10:31.25.

And he doesn’t have much time to rest, as he is headed to Lexington, Kentucky, to cheer on his team as the assistant track & field coach at Eastern Kentucky University!


8:30 a.m. – Bob Bryant, president and CEO of the 500 Festival, chats with Scott Swan about the importance of the Mini-Marathon and Indy 500 celebrations.

8:15 a.m. – Olympic gold medalist Frank Shorter chats with 13 Sports reporter Dominic Miranda at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway on the course of the Mini-Marathon.

8:10 a.m. – Wave 4 participants of the Mini-Marathon start their race.

8 a.m. – Chuck Lofton waves the green flag as Wave 3 starts the Mini-Marathon.


7:50 a.m. – Wave 2 participants of the Mini-Marathon start their race.

7:45 a.m. – The results are coming in for the Delta Dental 5K.

  • Women’s winner: Lilly Higgins (18:26.45)

7:20 a.m. – Here are the times for the fastest competitors in the Delta Dental 5K among the USA Track & Field team:

7:15 a.m. – Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett discusses the safety plan ahead of the Mini-Marathon.

7:10 a.m. – Following the USA Track & Field men and women, everyone else participating in the Delta Dental 5K lined up to start their race.

6:50 a.m. – Brothers of a Chord quartet sings “Back Home Again in Indiana” ahead of the Delta Dental 5K.

6:25 a.m. – Amy Yoder Begley, 2008 Olympian and director of long-distance running program for USA Track & Field, speaks with Chuck Lofton and Jalea Brooks ahead of the start of Mini-Marathon.

With the cooler temperatures and slight rain keeping the humidity down, Yoder Begley said there is potential for American record-breaking results!
