A Turning Point for Bosnia and Herzegovina’s Energy and Economy

In a landmark move, the World Bank’s Board of Executive Directors has approved a €79.9 million loan and a €2.89 million grant to support Bosnia and Herzegovina’s National Energy and Climate Plan. The initiative, titled Just Transition in Select Coal Regions of Bosnia and Herzegovina, aims to enhance energy independence, create new job opportunities, and revitalize local economies in former coal-dependent regions.

The project targets the repurposing of post-mining lands in Banovići, Zenica, and Kreka, and will facilitate the closure of underground works in Zenica. It also supports the installation of renewable energy systems at Banovići and Kreka mines, alongside comprehensive social protection and skills development programs for workers and communities transitioning away from coal.
