Space is open to gamers and is available for private parties.

MJR is bringing gaming to the movies with RP1, its new gaming and entertainment lounge, which is set to open Friday to theatergoers at its Southgate location.

RP1 — the name alludes, informally, to “Ready Player One,” the sci-fi novel turned 2018 Steven Spielberg movie — will feature semi-private areas offering access to more than 30 popular titles on the latest generation gaming consoles.

Those areas, which feature 11-foot screens, can accommodate groups of up to four people. Pricing starts at $20 and varies depending on booking time, time, and date.

Private bookings of the space can accommodate groups of up to 30 people, according to a release from MJR. Parties booked for birthday parties can include food and beverage packages, a dedicated host and more.

“MJR Theatres is thrilled to introduce RP1: Gaming and Entertainment Lounge as a new way to bring people together,” Joel Kincaid, MJR’s vice president of operations, said in a release.

“We are always looking for innovative ways to enhance the entertainment experience, and RP1 delivers just that by blending high-quality gaming with the social energy of the big screen.”

The RP1 lounge is the latest addition to the MJR Southgate, which introduced an IMAX screen in November 2023.

MJR has also recently brought Screen X technology, which extends the frame of view onto the walls of theater auditoriums, at its Waterford Township, Sterling Heights and Westland locations.
