Bill Gates to give most of his $200bn fortune to Africa
Microsoft founder Bill Gates says that most of his $200bn (£150bn) fortune will be spent on improving health and education services in Africa over the next 20 years.
The 69-year-old said that “by unleashing human potential through health and education, every country in Africa should be on a path to prosperity”
—
The US government has cut aid to Africa, including programmes to treat patients with HIV/Aids, as part of US President Donald Trump’s “America First” policy, raising concerns about the future of healthcare on the continent.
Gates said his foundation, which has a long history of operating in Africa, would focus on improving primary healthcare.
“What we’ve learned is that helping the mother be healthy and have great nutrition before she gets pregnant, while she is pregnant, delivers the strongest results,” he said.
“Ensuring the child receives good nutrition in their first four years as well makes all the difference.”
In a message to young innovators, the tech billionaire noted that mobile phones had revolutionised banking in Africa, and argued that AI should now be used for the continent’s benefit.
“Africa largely skipped traditional banking and now you have a chance, as you build your next generation healthcare systems, to think about how AI is built into that,” he said.
Gates pointed to Rwanda as an example, saying it was already improving services using AI-enabled ultrasound to identify high-risk pregnancies.

Funny how his “giving away” of his fortune has only multiplied his fortune over the years. Almost as though he is profiting madly off of his “charity” work.

Billionaires are full of shit. They give their money away to foundations with boards made up of all their friends who earn high salaries and “give” money to all their pet projects and further their own political aims and serve as tax write-offs.
Bill Gates should be giving most of his fortune away as taxes to a functional government. Everything he says and does like this is just working to avoid that outcome and make sure it never comes to pass. Extremely successfully.

It’s cool to see an asshole trying to do good in his old age. I notice that people keep hounding him for having more money now than before. If he had done what Musk has and says he will continue to do, Gates would be worth significantly more than Musk. He owned nearly 45% of Microsoft after IPO. He would be worth over a trillion dollars had he held onto all of it and not diversified.
The Gates foundation has given away more money to actual charities than any other person except for Warren Buffet. Gates is probably an entitled prick, but he is someone who has made a difference in the world outside of just his technology empire and we should at least acknowledge this.

Just to clarify: The Bill and Melinda Gates foundation does not give all it’s money away. They are actually only obligated to “give away” a tiny percentage of their money per year in oder to become a tax free foundation. Most of the money is invested in regular investments, whose return, on average, is equal or greater than the amount they give away.
Thus, in 20 years, the $200 billion won’t be used up, it’ll likely be $600 billion.
