Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick told a D.C. crowd this week that the Biden-era AI Safety Institute would be rebranded as the Center for AI Standards and Innovation, as a “place where people voluntarily go to drive analysis and standards.”

“As we move from large language models to large quantitative models, and we add all these different things, you want a place to go,” Lutnick said. “We say, has someone checked out this model? Is this a safe model? Is this a model that we understand? How do I do this? And we’re not going to regulate it. We are going to enhance the voluntary models of what great American innovation is all about.”

    > We are going to enhance the voluntary models of what great American innovation is all about.

This seems like two separate statements mashed together and I have no idea what this means when taken as a whole

  3. Be ready to hand over whatever privacy you have left for big AI. We seen how little they respect us with rules (ie META, Google etc), but with no rules there’s no holding them back.

I’d love an example of transformative technology that proved to not require regulation

If a malicious AGI already existed and was manipulating tech leaders and openly corrupt politicians from behind the scenes, this is exactly the kind of policy we’d see.

In the 1960’s, DuPont did some research that showed “C8”, a chemical they used for manufacturing Teflon, causes cancer. They hid this research, and continued pouring thousands of gallons of C8 into local water supplies around their factories. In 2013 they stopped, after the EPA put higher restrictions on safe levels of C8 in water. They lost several lawsuits, and had to pay millions of dollars in damages (out of the billions of dollars they made from poisoning everyone).

They switched to using a new chemical, which is just a shorter molecular cousin to C8. This chemical is also shown to cause cancer, but it hasn’t been regulated yet, so they’ll continue to use it until forced to stop. Then they’ll switch to a new chemical, and continue poisoning everyone.

Studies show 99% of humans have C8 in their blood. This is the “voluntary” safety model that America uses to ensure innovation, at the cost of human lives and well-being.

I’ve said it once and will say it again: The plan is for everyone who isn’t part of the owning class to die off. Once there are no more jobs other than owning things companies will shift to selling luxury items to other owners. After a couple of generations the poor will either all starve or the government will take care of them. Either way it’s not the businesses problems so they don’t care. Look at the bright side though for that 1% it will literally look like those sci fi utopia memes. All us normal people though will have to fight for scraps.

They also removed requirements that agencies start using quantum-resistant encryption. Why does this admin seem intent on leaking information.

  9. If the federal government isn’t going to regulate it, why have the audacity and short sightedness to regulate away the states ability to regulate it?

  10. Yeah… this doesn’t seem like a good idea, and I already 💙 my ChatGPT. We need rules and regulations for something meant to be so disruptive.

Honestly I think it would be better to focus on the rights of the people, rather than trying to craft relevant regulation. Right to be forgotten, right to freedom of association without manipulation, Right to healthcare, education and income, etc.

Good our adversary are probably going to use Ai too might as will be top dog in it 😎

  13. Its like watching a train wreck listening to the engineer saying they will wreck the train because otherwise someone else would?

Just one more syringe point injecting Sino-Russian money, a meddling activity and disinformation into the developed world bloodstream.
