I created this chart to visualize the shifting religious influence over the land of Palestine from 1000 BCE to 2025 CE — using a “stock market” style line graph to show how Judaism, Christianity, and Islam have risen and declined in relative presence and control over the region.
This is not a statement of ownership, but a visual representation of:
• Who held religious-political authority at key points in time,
• When transitions of power occurred,
• And how long each tradition maintained continuity in the land.
I used smoothed interpolation to represent transitions (e.g., Islamic conquest, Crusades, founding of Israel) and marked major events with colored dots and labels.
⸻
🔵 Judaism ✡️
• Dominates early history (Kingdoms of Israel and Judah)
• Influence sharply declines after 70 CE (Second Temple destruction)
• Modern resurgence begins with Zionism, culminating in 1948 (State of Israel)
🔴 Christianity ✝️
• Rises with the Roman Empire (Edict of Milan, 313 CE)
• Peaks during Byzantine rule and Crusader period
• Fades after 1291, with remnants under Ottoman and British rule
🟢 Islam ☪️
• Rapid rise after 637 CE (Rashidun conquest)
• Sustained influence under Umayyads, Abbasids, Fatimids, Mamluks, and Ottomans
• Retains cultural and demographic presence today through Palestinian identity
⸻
Key Historical Events:
• 1000 BCE – Kingdom of Israel
• 70 CE – Destruction of Second Temple
• 313 CE – Christianity legalized (Edict of Milan)
• 637 CE – Muslim conquest of Jerusalem
• 1099 CE – First Crusade
• 1291 CE – Fall of Acre (Crusader loss)
• 1917 CE – British Mandate begins
• 1948 CE – State of Israel established
⸻
Methodology:
• Created in Python using matplotlib + SciPy interpolation
• Influences are normalized to reflect relative share over time (not absolute population)
• Events plotted manually based on historical consensus
• Historical references: Behar et al. (Nature 2010), Karen Armstrong, Encyclopedia Britannica, Lazaridis et al. (Nature 2016)
⸻
🔗 Happy to share the code or data sources if anyone’s curious. Would love feedback on how to expand this with more layers — colonial powers, population movement, etc.

Tools Used:
– Python (3.11)
– Libraries: matplotlib, SciPy, NumPy, pandas
– Custom script for smoothing influence transitions using make_interp_spline
– Rendered in high-resolution with a dark background for visual clarity
Methodology:
– Each religion’s influence is defined by its control over political, religious, or administrative structures in the region.
– The chart spans from 1000 BCE to 2025 CE.
– I used key historical transitions (e.g., conquests, empire changes, nation founding) as pivot points for spline interpolation.
– Influence is normalized per year to reflect relative presence (not population).
so many questions, starting with why are religions displayed here BEFORE THEY WERE STARTED
everyone calling israelis colonialists should see this
What’s the Islam line mean before Muhammad?
What an insanely stupid graph, why is Christianity on the graph before the birth of Jesus? Why is Islam on the graph before the birth of Muhammad?
Mostly I’m curious what happened between 1000 and 750 BC that lead to an uptick in christians, which notably didn’t exist. Guess they had really, really good missionaries or something.
There needs to be a fourth line for other faith. Islam’s line shouldn’t start until 637, the first conquest of Jerusalem. Christianity’s line probably shouldn’t start before 30 AD.
I have no idea what these lines mean, as at the left of the graph Christianity and Islam haven’t been founded yet.
BCE/CE is such an atheist cope. still using Christian points of reference. Why not use Marvel Infinity war or the release date of the first funko pops?
Why stop at 1000 BC? People were there long before that
Absolutely insane that you didn’t include Zarethunai. It’s by far the most influential religion in the area from 2156 CE – 2382 CE. Just because the religion doesn’t exist yet, you omitted it?
