Trying to get a smart meter is like pulling teeth. I’m currently in between SGN wanting to replace my end of life meter with a non-smart meter, and when asking Octopus about making it a smart meter instead, they’re just giving vague mentions of queues.

In severaly places the teleswitches work better than the new meters as they use a radio frequency that propogates better than the new ones that use (iirc) mobile bands

I fucking hate smart meters. I got one installed because of this so-called switch off and I had it in my kitchen for about a week before I moved it to the spare room where I never look at it.
It’s so intrusive having a computer someone else controls sat in my house telling me “budget exceeded” when I didn’t set any budget and I don’t know what it comes from. Or the random moments where it decides to show weekly spend instead of daily and I have a fucking heart attack.
I have no idea how this is supposed to “save money” because it’s literally just a reporting tool. I have to use my washing machine. I have to turn on lights and cook. This does nothing for my energy efficiency and is a source of never ending anxiety.

My folks were told their meter would be ‘switched off’ with quite aggressive letters. They’ve had two appointments where the engineers didn’t bother turning up, now they don’t have the people to do it in time

We had ours changed a couple of weeks back. Constant calls, letters and emails saying you need to change your meter but I rang up on multiple occasions over the last six months and never any appointments available. All they did was succeed in freaking me out. Still glad to have it done.
The smart meter still hasn’t connected to the reader though- they said it could take weeks.

Why is this necessary? A few years ago I was told my dumb meter was “reaching the end of life”. I called and asked what that meant and no-one could explain exactly what would stop it working.
Unsurprisingly it’s still going round and round today like it has been for the past however many decades it’s been there.

We’ve had three attempts where the engineer turned up and told us our meter can’t be changed over. Given up now.
They changed our neighbour’s identical meter without issue.

I moved into a property with smart meters. The gas meter hasn’t been working since February.
I had an appointment for it to be looked at last week but they cancelled day of and said there are no other appointments for the foreseeable, so I’m stuck on estimated billing for the year.

Are the new smart gas meters still bigger than the old non smart ones ones? I replaced one a few years ago and had to modify the cupboard it sat in as it was about an inch deeper. I’m in the same situation again but this one will be nearly impossible to modify.

We have an “end of life” gas meter. British gas have phoned up multiple times and asked me if it’s ok to fit a smart meter. Every time I’ve said yes. Then they say between 9-5 Monday to Friday someone will have to be in. Well go fuck yourself then. Why would I use a days annual leave to have a meter fitted. You come on a weekend or an evening OR I’m happy to keep my old one.

Engineers must book 20 appointments and then choose 5 to actually attend, have had them booked in on numerous occasions and waited in patiently, they never show up. Call and can only get an appointment a month in advance, rinse and repeat. This has been going on since before 2025.

I told my supplier I don’t want one multiple times, which I’m within my rights to do. Despite this they keep booking appointments automatically that I then have to cancel.
I’ve had to block their phone numbers as they were ringing me every day and I’d have to tell them the same thing.

They keep sending letters to have a smart meter fitted, they go straight in bin 😅

We got a smart meter when they first came out. It worked well, except a year later when we started to shop around for a new deal, the provider we moved to couldn’t access the previous company’s smart meter info… so we had to go back to manual readings, fucking ridiculous.

We don’t have an RTS meter so we’re fine but we also don’t want a smart meter either.

I actually worked on the smart energy project for a few years. The tech companies (who one by one got bought by the different major energy suppliers) and even the energy suppliers themselves were all very professional in working to get the technology moving on (lookup Smart Energy on the CSA website, I was working on the wireless comms) but Government involvement was slow, moronic and painful. They’d try to rush the tech along and then delay delivering market requirements the technology needed to be able to handle.
Ministers would make statements about how its all coming together, the Smart Energy rollout is one track, showing off flashy commercials about to be all over TV stating how great they change is whilst also overseeing departments that refuse to make simple decisions over the tech, or deployment.

It’s wild people will willingly swap out their phone every couple of years, but will feverishly hang on to a meter installed decades ago

My smart metre surprisingly saves me money. Agile octopus is very good
Granted only a few £ a month, but it costs me nothing to run the washing machine / tumble dryer for example

The reason behind this is because the longwave broadcasting equipment relies on ancient vacuum tubes that nobody makes anymore. There’s only a handful left in the world, and I understand the BBC has one spare. In theory the tubes could fail at any time.

I have had 2 sets of smart meters over the years and neither have worked properly, apparently they are obsolete. My supplier, Outfox the market, are currently not fitting them in my area.

I’m with ovo, two guys came out over a year ago to swap out the rts and fit a smart meter, we still have the original meter and the rts, I’m reluctant to take another day of just to watch them fail to achieve a half hour task.

We had a smart meter installed but they can’t get it to connect to the network so we still have to do manual readings and no smart monitor.
I get the impression they don’t care because the smart meter is installed which is all that matters to the government.

Its smart alright its always changing to higher prices.

Fuck “smart” meters. Millions of them aren’t fit for purpose and they make no difference to your daily energy use. All they do is hand over more of your data and give a gaping backdoor to the energy companies and government in the name of the “net zero” cultist agenda.
