Probably a lot of coastal and river areas are because water is a convenient transportation method for goods after manufacture. I wonder where railroad tracks are, and which areas (historically) were the result of the railroads, and which railroad paths were built specifically because of the manufacturing already in progress? It would be cool to see an animation of manufacturing and railroads and highways over time.

Durable goods are goods that typically last at least 3 years. Examples include cars, airplanes, home appliances, and electronics.
Kinda insane how far NY manufacturing has fallen. Particularly upstate. Its also a bit skewed by the finance industry but alas
Michigan – cars
Indiana – trailers, mobile homes
Oregon – electronics maybe?
I wonder why Oregon is so high, maybe Intel?
If you look at it by county, look at those swaths on the East Coast. Are those related to ore deposits?
