Where’s the summer cooling payment?? Government should be providing lollies.

  2. At 11pm last night here is Edinburgh, loft temp was 29 degrees, upper bedroom temp was 24 and outside was 20. The house is all insulated, but that loft heat has kept the bedroom temp at 23 this morning when it’s now only 14 outside. Well that and being occupied. Time to fit a smart loft fan,I guess

We should be setting up cold banks for the summer similar to heat banks in the winter

I really feel for people struggling with this, the heat can be very oppressive if you aren’t prepared.

  4. I know someone who has to leave their flat for 6 hrs a day because it is already unbearably hot

Isn’t that comparable to the weekly deaths from air pollution, which just gets seen as business as usual.

  6. We should do something about this – like go back in time and not release so many greenhouse gases

I have portable AC and will be buying 2x more of them. The 250 year old part of my house stays cool. The 3 year old extension (same size as original house) gets HOT as hell because of the 900 yards of insulation we were forced to install.

And in winter… yeah, old part is just as warm as new bit. Always has been. Old houses were made of magic.

I’m at work, went outside for some fresh air, it almost killed me.

ITS 8 O CLOCK IN THE MORNING!!!

  9. People in a thread about this heatwave yesterday warning of consequences ‘Well I like the sun’.

I think the government needs to start thinking about air conditioning as standard

  11. Im waiting for the wave of boomers to tell me how much worse 1976 was and how they’ve always lived through worse…. blah blah blah

This is very sad. Where can people go to keep cool during this heatwave? Air churches air conditioned or naturally cool because of the stone? The inside of caves is always cool. We must do better at protecting our vulnerable from heat stroke.

  13. 15,000 people die every week. It’s never a headline. Never any context. Those people that die, sad though it is, are on the last innings of their life. This is not healthy people dropping down dead suddenly. We will not be able to save these peoples lives. We can not turn off the sun or control the weather. If you want to do something useful instead of moaning on the internet. Go to a hospice, go help that old lady who lives alone NEAR YOU. Do something caring in your community, you wont stop that many old and sick people dying, but at least they won’t be alone.

Doesnt help when people dont do the basics to protect themselves. My parents have all the windows open when its 30c+ outside. I keep telling them shut the windows, if its hotter outside than inside, its just going to warm the house up

They still do it, saying they “want fresh air to come in”

Its not that fresh at 30c!

I loved this group in the late 70’s.Boogie Nights is still a favourite of mine. Didn’t realise they are now killing people?

  16. “Summer Heatwave, could you find it in your heart to take my neighbours who blast their shit music outdoors on any day that the sun comes out?” TIA

Way more die in winter due to cold, and what do they do? Cut winter fuel payments for pensioners.

Yea first start with refurbishing hospitals to have air conditioning, especially in the wards.

Can you imagine being sick with a fever and have to suffer through the heat??

No need to worry about infection or what not because those with communicable diseases should have isolated in isolation ward anyways, and they should have negative pressure air conditioning too.

The other countries in the tropics in south eat Asia can build hospitals that has air conditioning throughout the building, I’m sure UK being an advanced developed country can manage to do that as well.

Can a heatwave put your balance out of whack because I’ve been unsteady on my feet for several days ( I did have a bit of an alcohol bender as well)

I’m not denying it, just laughing as I’m currently waiting for the torrential rain to stop before I get out of my car. It’s a pleasant 22° here, but it’s not a built up area and it makes a huge difference. All the endless concrete and tarmac we’re putting down is like having giant radiators.

  22. I totally agree that the government should step up during these heatwave disasters, not unlike the winter heating allowance, maybe some form of ‘summer cooling payments’? Maybe even as simple as providing lollies and ice creams to help people beat the heat. It’s equally concerning that we see similar death counts weekly from air pollution, seems like it’s just accepted as ‘business as usual’. By the way, anyone else filled out the r/UK census 2025 yet? I find it’s a good way to express our thoughts on these pressing issues.

Inb4 boomers “eee by ‘eck lad the gret heatwave of 72 never hurt anyone, we were outside in the 40c heat for weeks

Then it never occurs to them that anyone it might have killed isn’t around to post about it on Facebook
